Game recap: Fox Lane 4, Mahopac 3
BEDFORD - The high school baseball regular season is still in its infancy, but Saturday's game between Fox Lane and Mahopac had a playoff feel to it.
The Section 1 postseason seeding meeting isn't for another month, and there's plenty of baseball to be played until then, but the battle between the Foxes and Wolf Pac had all the makings of a postseason matchup: two Journal News/lohud Nine Who Shine Division I-committed standouts dueling on the mound, clutch plays, adrenaline swings for both teams and a dramatic finish.
In the end, the Foxes prevailed in the marquee matchup, thanks to a walk-off sac fly RBI by Logan Provost to bring home Danny Spolansky for a 4-3 victory.
"Obviously, a little anxiety there, but I tried to keep my composure as best as possible and battle the count," Provost said of his decisive at-bat. "Feels great. We played great against Carmel in our first game, we're 2-0, and we're just looking to keep on rolling."
The Foxes trailed early, 3-0, entering the bottom of the fourth after a couple of big hits by Tyler Castrataro and a timely RBI single from Vince Cataldo. They finally got going offensively, when Zach Goldman delivered a key two-run double with two outs. The Foxes' nine-hitter came through in a key moment and ignited his team.
"It's a very, very resilient group," Fox Lane coach Matt Hillis said of his team. "Zach Goldman's double was huge. Defensively, today, we could've been a little bit tighter, but never did we think that we were down or out of it. We knew Mahopac is an outstanding team. That was a really good pitcher, and we knew we had our work cut out for us."
John Czernyk followed up with the game-tying sac fly RBI in the bottom of the sixth, which made for a suspenseful seventh inning.
Tyler DeBrocky doubled for the Wolf Pac in the top of the seventh, but he was stranded at second base. In the bottom of the inning, once the Foxes got the go-ahead run over to second base, Mahopac intentionally walked the next two batters in order to get possible force outs at any base and potentially an inning-ending double play. Provost hit the ball into the outfield, and while there was a nice diving catch in right field, there was enough time to get Spolansky home for the win.
Brady Hopkins pitched the final 2⅓ innings and got the win in relief for the Foxes, after St. John's commit Tyler Renz started the game.
"I think Renz is the best pitcher in our class, and I think we had the best approach against him, then when (Hopkins) came in, we started to lose our approach a little bit," Mahopac coach Anthony Nappi said. "We made his day tough. He's a hell of a pitcher, and we tried to give him everything we could, and I felt like we did a good job of that initially. Afterward, we left a couple on the table where we could have take it up a step and blow it open a bit, but we missed some opportunities. That's baseball.
"In our opinion, they're one of the best teams in our class. We felt like this was an opportunity to have some playoff baseball only, and this was as good as it's gonna get, because with Renz on the mound and one of the better teams in our class, and I think we proved that we can hang with them. Hopefully, we can get them next time."
What it means: The only thing missing was sunny and warmer weather, but it was a marquee early-season matchup that had it all. These two teams are hoping to take a step up and go even further as contenders this year. Both teams have plenty of returners. While Castrataro and Renz are individual standouts, there were big plays and moments from various parts of the lineup on both teams. It was a complete matchup, and there will be plenty of fuel for both teams moving forward.
Player of the game: Tyler Castrataro, Mahopac — His team fell short, but he had a major impact on the mound and in the batter's box. Castrataro opened the game with a leadoff solo home run, then got a triple in his next at-bat, in a deep fly ball to center field that would've been gone in most high school baseball venues. The Hofstra commit threw six innings in the no-decision, giving up three earned runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out six. He went 2-for-2 with a triple, home run, RBI, two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base.
"He's just a great athlete, and he's gonna give us everything he can," Nappi said. "... He had a great day, and we're lucky to have him. There's a reason why he's Nine Who Shine."
By the numbers
Fox Lane (2-0) — Junior Brady Hopkins got his first varsity win, throwing 2⅓ innings, with four strikeouts. Tyler Renz pitched the first 4⅔ innings, surrendering two earned runs, five hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters. Zach Goldman went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. John Czernyk and Logan Provost each had a sac fly RBI. Provost also went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Danny Spolansky drew two walks and scored the game-winning run.
Mahopac (2-1) — Outside of Castrataro, Vince Cataldo went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Tyler DeBrocky was 2-for-4 with a double, while Rob Keller was 2-for-3. The Wolf Pac flashed their speed and recorded eight stolen bases as a team, including Anthony Eppolito's pair of stolen bases as a pinch runner. After entering the game in the fourth inning, Eppolito stole second, then third, and was able to advance home after a Fox Lane error to give Mahopac a 3-0 lead.
They said it
"We didn't lose that many people. We didn't have many seniors, so we're the same team as last year, just older. We're looking to be better than last year. Just keep getting stronger, keep moving forward, and get better than we are today." — Fox Lane senior Tyler Renz
"Section 1 has so much good baseball that you can't let this one fill your heads with too much confidence. Confidence is one thing and I'm cool with it, but let's just take every game, not overlook anybody and do the right thing." — Fox Lane coach Matt Hillis
Spoke with @foxlanebaseball's Logan Provost, who had the game-winning sacrifice fly RBI to top off Fox Lane's 4-3 win over Mahopac! @LoganProvost25
