BASEBALL: Claremore splits with Valliant, Broken Bow to conclude Southeast Shootout

Mar. 22—Claremore experienced a mixed bag the final two days at the Southeast Shootout in Broken Bow.

The Zebras suffered a heart-wrenching 7-6 loss to Valliant on Wednesday thanks to a walkoff single in the eighth inning before rallying triumphantly on Thursday with a commanding 16-8 win over the host Savages. With a 10-3 overall record, Claremore returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday against Caney Valley at home.

VALLIANT 7, CLAREMORE 6

With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth, Brody Dorries singled on a line drive to center field to score Jaxson Beene for the game-winning run.

The hit capped the Bulldogs' rally, which saw them overcome three deficits — including a 5-0 hole going into the third inning. Dorries was instrumental in the initial comeback as well, sending a 2-RBI double to left field in the third after a bases-loaded walk got Valliant on the board.

Auzy Trapp then singled in Rowen Gee in the fourth to trim the deficit further to 5-4, and Hayzn Harmon later evened the tally with an RBI double to left field that plated Davion Hankins. The Zebras retook the lead in the seventh when Brad Hoisington scored on Zach Hale's sacrifice fly, but Clancy Trapp drove in Michael Tuck with a double in the bottom half to once again tie the game.

Claremore opened the scoring in the second inning with a bases-loaded walk, and a Hoisington sac fly scored Saxton Pickup two pitches later. Marcos Sallee immediately followed with an RBI single to center field, scoring Gunner Holm, and he found home shortly thereafter on a Dan Harrington double that increased the spread to 5-0.

Sallee led the Zebras at the plate, collecting two of their five hits.

On the defensive side, Ryder Garrison took the loss after allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two on 28 pitches through 1.2 innings. Kellen Gaede started on the mound for Claremore, lasting three innings before Brennan Combs came in for three innings of relief.

Harmon paced the Bulldogs with a 3-for-3 outing with two RBIs, and Dorries added two hits with three RBIs.

Landyn Howard earned the win despite throwing only 12 pitches through one inning, striking out one. Clancy Trapp threw the other seven frames, tossing two strikeouts on 105 pitches while allowing five hits, six runs and four walks.

CLAREMORE 16, BROKEN BOW 8

Despite the lopsided score, the Zebras didn't truly pull away until the sixth inning.

Already ahead by three at that point, Claremore added four runs to its advantage after earning three-consecutive walks to begin the frame. A sac fly from Pickup scored Tyson Grimett, and Hale scored on a wild pitch before an Izaak McMahan fielder's choice and a Tyler Osgood RBI single gave the Zebras a 12-5 edge.

Broken Bow answered with three runs in the bottom half via a Jackson Lindly single, a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch, but it wasn't enough to make a difference. Claremore tacked on another four runs in the seventh, scoring on an error, a Hoisington RBI double and a 2-RBI double from McMahan.

The Zebras took an early 2-0 lead in the first after Harrington singled in Grimett and Hale scored on a fielder's choice, but the Savages answered in the bottom half with an RBI single from Greydon Howell and a bases-loaded walk.

McMahan scored on a Grimett sac fly in the second, but Broken Bow took advantage of a wild pitch in the third to knot the tally at 3-all. Claremore finally took the lead for good in the fourth, but the Savages remained within striking distance.

A Sallee 2-RBI double to center field gave the Zebras a 5-3 edge in the fourth, and though Howell trimmed the deficit back to one with a single, singles from Hoisington and Gaede in conjunction with an error gave them an 8-4 safety net.

Christian Martinez singled in Brayden Williams in the fifth to pull Broken Bow within three runs, but Claremore answered with consecutive four-run innings to secure the victory.

The Zebras collected 12 hits in the win, with Hoisington, McMahan and Sallee accounting for two apiece. The latter earned the win on the mound, tossing six strikeouts on 109 pitches while allowing four hits, four runs and six walks through 3.2 innings.

Pickup and Hoisington pitched as well, combining for six strikeouts on 91 pitches.

Howell and Martinez led the Savages at the plate with three and two hits, respectively, as part of the team's seven-hit performance. Broken Bow used three pitchers but managed only one strikeout on a combined 136 pitches.
