Baltimore Orioles draft Lakeland grad Retzbach

Jul. 19—Adam Retzbach, a Lakeland High School graduate and Lehigh University catcher, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.

Retzbach, 21, is coming off a junior season where batted .294 with a .957 OPS for Lehigh. In 50 games, he had 11 home runs, 12 doubles and two triples. This summer, he's playing with the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and is batting .253 with an .823 OPS.

His former batterymate, pitcher and Archbald native Mason Black, was selected in the third round of last year's draft by the San Francisco Giants.

Retzbach can either sign a contract with the Baltimore Orioles and become a professional baseball player — players selected outside of the top 10 rounds can receive a signing bonus of up to $150,000 without it counting against teams' bonus pools — or return for another season of college ball.
