'Back in the lab' and '(expletive) show': Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan on 2023 plans

The Indianapolis Colts' most recent Week 1 quarterbacks are staying ready. Free agents Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan are letting teams know they are training as if a call is coming.

Wentz took to Instagram over the weekend, wearing Colts shorts, a Washington Commanders practice jersey and a Philadelphia Eagles helmet: "Back in the lab … just looks a little different so far this year 🙃 #alternateuniforms #trainingcamp2023"

Wentz has played for all three teams. In 2021, he completed 62.4% of his passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions as the Colts faltered in the last weeks of the season to miss the playoffs.

The Colts traded Wentz to Washington after that season, picking up Ryan in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.

Ryan, who started the 2022 season as QB1, had choice words for the trade process and his year in Indianapolis.

“I mean, it was a (expletive) show, you know, it was a (expletive) show of 18 months basically is the best way to describe it,” Ryan told The Athletic.

Ryan said he remains in shape but is excited about his analyst role with CBS Sports this season.

Of his time with the Colts, Ryan said it was "hard to pick just one" trying moment. He got benched after Week 7, resumed playing in Week 10, then was benched again for the final three weeks.

"It was one of those things, you know, I felt like I was going into it in a position where I'd probably seen it all in 14 years and then realize, 'No you have not, you have not seen it all,'" he said. "... It was a difficult year, there's no doubt about that."

As for the possibility of returning to the field, Ryan said: "I'm staying in shape. I think it is kind of, 'You know my number. You know where I'm at.' If anything were to come up, you know, we'll see."
