Augustine surpasses Frank Keaney for all-time University of Rhode Island wins total

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — There’s a new wins king in Kingston.

Longtime University of Rhode Island club hockey coach, Joe Augustine surpassed Frank Keaney as the winningest coach in Rams' athletics history.

The Rams’ bench boss holds a 713-355-75 record over 34 seasons, and surpassed Keaney’s record of 707 wins on Nov. 18 in a 2-0 decision against Northern Illinois University.

Keaney, who held the top mark since 1948, coached basketball, football, baseball, track and cross country at the then-named, Rhode Island State College across 28 seasons.

Augustine, of Scituate, was recognized at Boss Arena on Saturday afternoon before the Rams’ tilt against Drexel University and downplayed the accomplishment in a recent press release from the team.

Augustine said, “no one should compare what he has done to Keaney’s overall record,” according to the release.

Augustine has coached more than 1,000 players over his tenure and won the 2006 American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I national championship 3-1 over Penn State. He also coached Team USA in the World University Games in China in 2009.

Rhode Island plays in the ACHA and are 13-11-2 this season.
