Arizona Cardinals beat Falcons in Kyler Murray's return

Look back at our score updates and analysis from the Arizona Cardinals vs. Atlanta Falcons NFL game on Sunday at State Farm Stadium.

Cardinals win in Kyler Murray's return

It was a gain of 13 yards, but Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray ran about four times that far to pick up the first down. Murray, who had dropped back to pass, eluded a few defenders before powering forward. He slid down after reaching the first-down marker.

That was just the beginning of the remarkable plays the Cardinals needed to get their second win of the season. Arizona beat the Atlanta Falcons 25-23 on a last-second field goal by Matt Prater.

Seconds after the scramble, Murray completed a 33-yard pass to tight end Trey McBride, who shrugged off a couple defenders along the way. The gain took the Cardinals down to the Falcons 9.

A James Conner run moved the ball up to the 2 where the Cardinals took a knee to set up a Matt Prater field goal with 2 seconds on the clock.

Murray was 19-for-32 passing for 249 yards with an interception. He carried the ball six times for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Prater kicked four field goals.

McBride led all receivers with eight catches for 131 yards. Conner finished with 73 yards on 16 carries.

Falcons hold late lead over Cardinals

Desmond Ridder, in for Atlanta at quarterback following a hamstring injury to Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarter, led the Falcons on an eight-play 74 yard drive. Ridder capped the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run on third-and-4.

The drive was extended when Antonio Hamilton was flagged for pass interference. The penalty moved the ball 32 yards from the Arizona 47 to the 15.

Ridder is 4-for-6 passing for 40 yards. Heinicke was 8-for-15 for 55 yards and a touchdown before exiting. He will not return.

The Cardinals weren't able to do anything with the possession. They took just 2:06 off the clock. After a 10-yard run by James Conner gave the Cardinals a new set of downs, they ended up losing all Conner had gained when Kyler Murray was sacked.

Black Gillikin ended up punting 53 yards to the Falcons 26. Atlanta gets the ball with 5:43 to play at its own 26.

The touchdown was set up by a 14-yard pass from Kyler Murray to Michael Wilson. It initially appeared that Wilson reached the end zone, but upon review, the Cardinals were given the ball inside the 1.

The Cardinals started the drive with favorable field position. The defense held the Falcons to a three-and-out and back them up 6 yards. The 60-yard punt by the Falcons was then returned 49 yards by Greg Dortch.

Arizona started its series at the Falcons 21.

Kyler Murray throws first interception of the season

On the first play of a possession, Kyler Murray took a snap under center and promptly threw an interception.

The pass, intended to tight end Trey McBride, was picked off by Nate Landman. After a return of 25 yards, he was pushed out of bounds by Murray.

The Falcons take over with a first-and-10 from the Arizona 14 with 6:35 to play in the third.

Matt Prater hit 3rd field goal to give Cardinals the lead

The kicks haven't been easy, but Cardinals kicker Matt Prater has made them look that way.

With 9:16 left in the third quarter, Prater connected for a 56-yard field goal. Of his three field goals on Sunday, the shortest was from 46-yards.

Any hope the Cardinals had of finding the end zone was reduced by penalties. The Cardinals faced a first-and-20 and then a first-and-30.

Instead, Atlanta kept moving the ball.

Atlanta was good with the extra point.

It wasn't the first time on the series that the Falcons faced third-and-long. On that series, the Falcons were rescued by a roughing the passer call against the Cardinals, which move the ball 15 yards.
