ASU women’s basketball suffers first loss at Grambling State

The Arizona State women’s basketball team lost the lead to Grambling State in the second quarter and could never recover, dropping 70-67 Thursday in Grambling, LA.

Despite four of the starting five finishing in double figures, ASU trailed 45-32 at halftime and couldn’t make up for the lack of scoring in the second quarter.

The Sun Devils shot 23-for-55 (41.8%) in the game, but gave up 15 3-pointers on 24 attempts (62.5%), which ultimately cost the game.

ASU held a two-point lead over Grambling State at the start of the second quarter, but 27 points, all from 3-pointers, solidified a massive lead for GSU. ASU outscored GSU 35-25 in the second half, but could never undo the defensive lapses in the second quarter.

Kadidia Toure and Jaddan Simmons both led with 18 points, while Toure had seven rebounds. Maggie Besselink recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Trayanna Crisp had 10 points and two 3-pointers.

ASU lost the rebounding battle by two and were outscored 14-8 on the bench. GSU’s DeMya Young led with 23 points and seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts.

ASU will return home to Desert Financial Arena on Sunday at 6 p.m. against Idaho State.
