ASU football's offense comes alive, Sun Devils get first Pac-12 win vs. Washington State

The Arizona State Sun Devils hosted the Washington State Cougars in a Week 9 Pac-12 college football game on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

ASU football's offense comes alive in win over Washington State

The ASU football team has struggled on offense for most of the season.

It had a breakout performance against Washington State on Saturday.

The Sun Devils scored a season high 38 points in a 38-27 win over Washington State, winning their first Pac-12 game of the season and ending a 6-game losing streak.

ASU's previous high this season was 28 points in a 42-28 loss to USC.

The Sun Devils had 509 yards of total offense, with 274 coming through the air, where QB Trenton Bourguet went 19-for-26 in a breakout effort.

But the ground game was the story.

ASU rushed for 235 yards in the game, averaging six yards per rush.

Cameron Skattebo had 11 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown, while DeCarlos Brooks had 11 carries for 67 yards and three touchdowns, his first three touchdowns of the season.

Elijhah Badger had ASU's other touchdown, also a rushing score.

ASU went 8-for-11 on third downs in the game. Washington State was 3-for-12.

Washington State QB Cam Ward was 35-for-50 for 315 yards in the game, with one touchdown pass. He carried the ball 12 times for 35 yards and two touchdowns.

Washington State had 88 yards rushing on 21 attempts in the game.

The Sun Devils improved to 2-6 with the win. They play at Utah next week.

The Cougars fell to 4-4 with the loss. They host Stanford next week.

Final score: ASU 38, Washington State 27

ASU's defense delivers late vs. Washington State

The ASU defense came through when the team needed it most.

Did it ever.

The Sun Devils' defense just stopped Washington State again deep in ASU territory, but this time the Cougars didn't attempt a field goal and turned the ball over on downs after a 12-play, 72-yard drive.

The Sun Devils are close to winning their first Pac-12 game of the season.

Washington State settles for another field goal vs. ASU

ASU's defense held Washington State to another field goal, this one a 34-yarder from Dean Janikowski, to pull within 38-27.

But the Cougars are still down by 11. It's still a two score game.

Washington State's drive took 13 plays and went for 48 yards and 5:20.

But the Cougars couldn't score a touchdown after having a 1st and goal from the ASU 6.

ASU's lead up to 14 after impressive drive vs. Washington State

ASU has over 200 yards rushing for the first time since the season opener ... last year.

The Sun Devils' extended their lead with a 3-play, 75-yard drive that took just 1:07 off the clock.

DeCarlos Brooks, who entered the game with no touchdowns on the season, just ran for his third score to give ASU the 38-24 lead.

Where did this come from?

ASU has has 481 yards of offense in this game, 274 passing and 207 rushing.

They are 7-for-9 on third down.

ASU holds Washington State to field goal

The third quarter ended with Washington State's Dean Janikowski hitting a 31-yard field goal to cut ASU's lead to 31-24.

But Washington State had a first and 10 at ASU's 22 on the drive and couldn't get into the end zone.

The Cougars gained 60 yards on 10 plays on the drive.

Washington State forces ASU's first 3-and-out

The Cougars just forced ASU to go 3-and-out for the first time in this game.

Cameron Skattebo had a 1-yard run, followed by completions of just 4-yards and 3-yards for Trenton Bourguet, forcing ASU to punt.

ASU football comes up with stop vs. Cougars

Washington State managed just 12 yards over five plays before having to punt vs. ASU, giving the ball back to the Sun Devils with a chance to extend their lead.

ASU's defense has had some very good moments against the Cougars and Cam Ward getting sacked for a loss of four yards on 3rd and 5 at the WSU 41 was one of them.

Sun Devils start second half strong, extend lead vs. Washington State

Now that's how you start a second half.

The Sun Devils just went 75 yards on 12 plays over 6:34 to take a 31-21 lead on a 6-yard run from Elijhah Badger.

The 31 points are the most points ASU has scored this season.

Let's give the ASU running game (and offensive line) some credit. Arizona State has 198 rushing yards in this game. All four of its TDs have come on the ground. It is averaging 7.3 yards per carry.

Not too shabby.

The rushing touchdown was Badger's first rushing score of the season.

ASU football kicks field goal, takes lead into half vs. Washington State

The Sun Devils' offense is on a roll.

ASU's Dario Longhetto just made a 51-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to give the Sun Devils a 24-21 lead. ASU got a break when the clock was stopped for an apparent injury to tight end Jalin Conyers, who hobbled off the field with help, allowing ASU to set up the field goal without a timeout, which they did not have.

ASU's drive went for 42 yards over seven plays and took 42 seconds.

ASU will get the ball to start the second half.

ASU is trying to win its first Pac-12 game this season.

The offense has looked really good for ASU. The Sun Devils have 16 first downs, are 5-for-6 on third downs and have 311 total yards. Trenton Bourguet is 11-for-17 passing for 148 yards and the Sun Devils have 163 yards on 20 rushing attempts.

Washington State evens score again before half against ASU football

It didn't take Washington State long to tie the game again late in the first half against ASU.

Cam Ward connected with Lincoln Victor on a 9-yard pass with 42 seconds left in the half to camp a 5-play, 75-yard drive that only took 1:33 off the clock.

Cameron Skattebo rushes ASU to another lead vs. Washington State

ASU had not had a rush of 20 or more yards this season before the Sun Devils' most recent drive.

Notice we said before.

Cameron Skattebo ripped off a run for 66 yards on ASU's first play of its next possession, and then ran it in from 2-yards out for a touchdown after two other plays, to give ASU a 21-14 lead with 2:15 left in the first half.

The 75-yard drive took just four plays.

ASU now has 143 yards rushing in this game. It has 269 yards of total offense. The team is 4-for-5 on third downs.

There have been a lot of positives for the Sun Devils in this first half.

Cam Ward, Washington State respond vs. Arizona State

Washington State has tied this game with QB Cam Ward's second rushing score of the game. This one came from 11 yards out and capped a 75-yard drive over seven plays and 2:27.

Ward is now 15-for-20 in the game for 127 yards. He has completed passes to eight different receivers.

Washington State has 153 yards of total offense. Ward has accounted for 140 of them.

He has five carries for 13 yards and two touchdowns.

Sun Devils take first lead vs. Cougars

The ASU football team has its first lead of the game against Washington State.

DeCarlos Brooks just ran it in from 1-yard out to give Arizona State a 14-7 lead with 7:14 left in the second quarter.

It is Brooks' second touchdown of the game. He didn't have any this season before the game.

Brooks has six carried for 36 yards and the two touchdowns in the game. He entered the contest with 31 carries for 153 yards on the season. He missed four games this season with injury.

ASU's scoring drive went for 70 yards on seven plays.

Score: ASU 14, Washington State 7 (7:14 left in second quarter)

Arizona State defense stands strong vs. Washington State

The Sun Devils just forced a 3-and-out for the Cougars, with Washington State losing seven yards on the drive.

Washington State has 88 yards in the game, but just 13 since their opening scoring drive.

The Cougars only have 15 yards rushing.

Cameron Ward went 8-for-11 for 64 yards on the first drive for Washington State. He's now 10-for-14 for 73 yards.

ASU comes up short on second drive vs. Washington State

The Sun Devils went 59 yards over 11 plays on their next possession, but Dario Longhetto missed a 50-yard field goal and ASU missed an opportunity to take a lead on the Cougars.

ASU benefitted from a roughing the passer call on Washington State for a late hit after Trenton Bourguet had thrown an incomplete pass on 3rd and 9 at the ASU 38 on the drive.

ASU RB DeCarlos Brooks is up to 28 yards on four carries for the Sun Devils.

QB Trenton Bourguet is 5-for-10 for 59 yards.

ASU defense stops Washington State on second possession

ASU's defense fared much better against Washington State on the Cougars' second drive.

The Sun Devils forced Washington State to punt after a three-and-out and only 20 yards on the drive, with 15 of them coming on a roughing the passer penalty on ASU's Prince Dorbah.

ASU football answers with touchdown drive on opening possession vs. Washington State

The Sun Devils have matched the Cougars, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive of the game.

ASU's touchdown came on a 13-yard run from DeCarlos Brooks to end a 10-play, 75-yard drive and even the score at 7-7.

Trenton Bourguet went 3-for-5 for 43 yards on the drive for the Sun Devils, who got five carries from four different players for 32 yards rushing on the possession.

Are we in for a shootout in Tempe?

Neither defense has been able to stop the offense in the early going of this Pac-12 game.

The Cougars have jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the Sun Devils after a lengthy, methodical opening drive to the game.

How lengthy? It took 15 plays for Washington State to drive 75 yards. The drive took 6:27 off the clock.

QB Cam Ward ran it in from 3-yards out for the score. He also picked up a key 3-yard run on a 4th and 1 at the ASU 27 to extend the drive.

Ward went 8-for-11 for 64 yards on the drive.

Score: Washington State 7, ASU 0 (8:33 left in first quarter)

Washington State is a 6.5-point favorite in the game, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Cougars are -241 on the moneyline. The Sun Devils are +195.

The over/under for the game is set at 51 points.

Most sites are going with the Cougars to beat the Sun Devils, but not all of them are picking Washington State to beat ASU.

ASU wearing Ghost Story uniform vs. Washington State

The Sun Devils will wear their new “Ghost Story” uniform from adidas for Saturday's 5 p.m. game against the Cougars at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

The Halloween connection stems from the name the adidas’ new uniform line: Primeknit Ghost.

The black and gold uniform will feature a unique Glow-in-the-Dark trim around the numbers and the adidas and Pac-12 logos that align with the upcoming Halloween festivities, as well as a gray gradient Arizona state flag sewn into the jersey along the uniform sides.
