Ashes LIVE: England vs Australia score and third Test updates as hosts fightback at Headingley

Mark Wood produced a thrilling display of fast bowling to help England blow away Australia on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley but the match is in the balance as the hosts reply.

The quick bowler, playing his first Test of the summer, produced a hostile opening spell before cleaning up the Australian tail to finish with a first Test five-for on English soil.

But Mitchell Marsh met fire with fire, producing a magnificent run-a-ball hundred to rescue Australia after four early wickets. The all-rounder’s ton was the fastest by an Australian on English soil since Victor Trumper in 1902, but his dismissal on the stroke of tea precipitated an extraordinary collapse of six for 23 as Wood tore through the lower order.

The Durham rocketman’s five-for-34 led the way to curtail Australia’s innings at 263 all out. Follow all the live action below from Headingley as England face Australia:

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said: “I think when Ben Stokes is there you’re never in total control.

“We feel as though we’re in a pretty strong position 142 ahead, but it could have been better.”

On Smith’s dismissal: “Whenever it’s high pressure there’s going to be errors, and that’s what happened with Steve.”

McDonald added that he did not know anything about the tame words exchanged between Smith and Bairstow following the wicket.

Moeen Ali speaks to Sky Sports at the end of day two

18:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“When Robbo had the spasm in his back, I thought ‘I’m bowling a few overs here!’. It was nice, I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the fields that were set, things like that. It was good fun.

“The body is surprisingly good. I’m a little bit sore, the shoulder will be stiff tomorrow, but it’s been good in the Edgbaston Test and this one so far. The finger is alright - it’s sore but not impossible for me to bowl now. It’s just about getting through the first few overs and then settling in. I couldn’t grip it because of the blood and stuff. I need that grip.

“I’ve really enjoyed being back, the environment is amazing. Having Stokesy as captain is perfect for someone like me. He knows my type of bowling is to try and take wickets and he backs me.

“Stokesy played an amazing innings and put us in a position where we’ve got a great chance. That session was really good, having them four down and they haven’t really got away from us. A couple of poles early tomorrow will be great - with someone of Woody’s pace, it’s not easy for the lower guys to come in.”

STUMPS! AUSTRALIA 116/4 (lead by 142)

18:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There concludes another gripping day of Ashes cricket. An excellent evening for England to leave the game, and stop me if you’ve heard this before this summer, firmly in the balance. Moeen Ali was very good, drawing two uncharacteristic errors out of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, while Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and, particularly, Mark Wood kept Australia on their toes at the other end.

The lead is 142, which must surely be swollen significantly on a good chasing ground - we hope we’ll be back tomorrow, but a grotty forecast could spoil things.

Australia 116/4 (47), Travis Head 18, Mitch Marsh 17, Mark Wood 0-12 (10) (lead by 142)

18:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wood’s average pace is about three miles an hour down today than where he was in the first innnings - though in excess of 88mph is still plenty brisk enough. What has stood out has been the lack of loose balls, quick bowling often bringing with it quick runs but Australia entirely unable to get England’s gasman away.

Headingley clap Wood in for his final ball...which Mitch Marsh leaves alone.

Australia 115/4 (46), Travis Head 17, Mitch Marsh 17, Moeen Ali 2-34 (17) (lead by 141)

18:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Harry Brook is brought in at short leg, Mitch Marsh’s lengthening shadow a useful depth gauge as Brook sets up camp at boot hill.

Moeen Ali concludes an excellent spell. 17 overs unchanged, all delivered accurately to keep Australia tied down. Tidy stuff throughout, and with those two big fish snared earlier, of course.

Mark Wood to finish things off.

Australia 115/4 (45), Travis Head 17, Mitch Marsh 17, Mark Wood 0-11 (9) (lead by 141)

18:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Travis Head gets up on his toes and reaches up for the top shelf, safely bring the ball down with his bat face and finding space to take a single.

A Jonny Bairstow fumble allows a bye, the first of a tidier innings behind the stumps from England’s gloveman, bringing Head back on strike. Wood charges in over the wicket, and will like the look of that shot, an away-from-the-body joust that nearly carries to Ben Duckett in the gully.

Australia 113/4 (44), Travis Head 16, Mitch Marsh 17, Moeen Ali 2-34 (16) (lead by 139)

18:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Marsh knocks Australia off Nelson, an inside edge spinning into the legside. Travis Head pats one up through mid-on for one.

Ben Stokes wants to liven things up in these final ten minutes before the close - Mark Wood should get two overs in to end the day.

Australia 111/4 (43), Travis Head 15, Mitch Marsh 16, Stuart Broad 1-36 (10) (lead by 137)

18:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Solidly struck by Mitch Marsh, firmly on the front foot as Stuart Broad offers him a long half-volley. Driven handsomely through the covers.

Australia 106/4 (42), Travis Head 15, Mitch Marsh 11, Moeen Ali 2-32 (15) (lead by 132)

18:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Objective number one for these two is obviously to get though the next 20 minutes, a potentially potent and powerful pairing perfectly content to plod through to the close.

Tomorrow’s forecast is properly ugly - there’s a thunderstorm warning in the Leeds area.

Australia 104/4 (41), Travis Head 13, Mitch Marsh 11, Stuart Broad 1-31 (9) (lead by 130)

18:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Headingley crowd have some fun, jokingly launching into a full-throated appeal as Mitch Marsh stoops to pick up the ball and pass it back to the bowler. Stuart Broad smiles. Another maiden.

Australia 104/4 (40), Travis Head 13, Mitch Marsh 11, Moeen Ali 2-30 (14) (lead by 130)

18:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Maiden number two for Moeen Ali, now through 14 overs unchanged. He’s doing the holding role rather well for his captain, allowing Ben Stokes to rotate through his three fully fit seamers at the other end.

Australia 104/4 (39), Travis Head 13, Mitch Marsh 11, Stuart Broad 1-31 (8) (lead by 130)

18:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad returns with two slips in tow, and men back on the legside if he wants to throw in the odd bouncer with half-an-hour until stumps.

Hundred up for Australia, Mitch Marsh lubricating the limbs and bringing them through smoothly as he cover drives pristinely.

Inside edged! That’s a nothing shot from Marsh, eager to score but pushing at a nip-backer, and he’s lucky it neither bothers his bails nor carries to Jonny Bairstow. That’s more assured - half a step down and then a fierce back-cut as Broad offers him width.

Australia 96/4 (38), Travis Head 13, Mitch Marsh 3, Moeen Ali 2-30 (13) (lead by 122)

17:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mitch Marsh is filthy with himself as he somehow swats a dirty Moeen Ali drag-down straight to midwicket. No signs yet of the crisp timing he found in the first innings.

Australia 95/4 (37), Travis Head 13, Mitch Marsh 2, Chris Woakes 1-28 (9) (lead by 121)

17:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wood has been off the field, so may have to wait a little while yet befoer he is permitted to return. Woakes is therefore asked to provide the sharp stuff, Travis Head ducking out of the way.

Australia 91/4 (36), Travis Head 11, Mitch Marsh 0, Moeen Ali 2-29 (12) (lead by 117)

17:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mark Wood calls over to Ben Stokes, wondering if it might already be time for him to go again. Not yet - Chris Woakes continues after Moeen Ali keeps things tight.

Australia 90/4 (35), Travis Head 10, Mitch Marsh 0, Chris Woakes 1-24 (8) (lead by 116)

17:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mitch Marsh has already dragged Australia out of danger once in this Test - he might have to do it again here, particularly with the way Australia’s tail was blown away by Mark Wood yesterday.

OUT! Usman Khawaja c †Bairstow b Woakes 43 (96b 3x4 0x6), Australia 90/4 (34.5)

17:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A flat-footed poke and Australia’s rock is dislodged!

That’s exactly the ball that Usman Khawaja can struggle with. It’s fuller than he thinks from Chris Woakes, angling across the left-hander from over the wicket, and it’s a fatal combination of immobile feet and pursuing hands. A thin edge is pocketed by Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps - England have a real opening!

Australia 88/3 (33), Travis Head 9, Usman Khawaja 42, Moeen Ali 2-28 (11) (lead by 114)

17:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The two left-handers swap singles as Moeen Ali continues to shile away in the evening sunshine.

Australia 86/3 (33), Travis Head 8, Usman Khawaja 41, Chris Woakes 0-21 (7) (lead by 112)

17:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just the single from Chris Woakes’s over, Usman Khawaja, as you might expect, staying calm.

Australia 84/3 (32), Travis Head 7, Usman Khawaja 40, Moeen Ali 2-26 (10) (lead by 110)

17:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Drilled! That’s decisively done by Travis Head, not fearing significant spin and thus driving with impunity, piercing two cover catchers for four.

Australia 78/3 (31), Travis Head 2, Usman Khawaja 39, Chris Woakes 0-20 (6) (lead by 104)

17:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mark Wood is off the field, with the busy Will Luxton, a Yorkshire youngster, again employed as a substitute fielder. Ollie Robinson is out there still - I’m not sure he’ll bowl this evening but it does ensure he’ll be able to go immediately tomorrow if that back spasm continues to clear up.

Travis Head almost catches up with one down the leg-side - you may recall he was dropped by Jonny Bairstow playing a similar shot in the first innings, chasing a short and wide ball that should probably just be left to pass, and that one is mightily close to both bat and glove as Head tries to cuff it down to fine leg.

Australia 76/3 (30), Travis Head 1, Usman Khawaja 38, Moeen Ali 2-19 (9) (lead by 102)

17:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Moeen Ali is just the third English spinner to make it to 200 Test wickets, following Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann to a double ton. He’s not in their class, obviously, but it does show what a valuable cricket he’s been over the nine years he’s been involved. Moeen hasn’t had to do too much today for those two prized poles, but he’s kept things tight, and your liable to get dismissals like that as a tweaker with Mark Wood putting a fright up the batters at the other end.

Australia’s lead is up over 100 after a misfield at midwicket. Wood’s spell is capped at five overs, sensibly - Chris Woakes returns.

Australia 73/3 (29), Travis Head 0, Usman Khawaja 36, Mark Wood 0-10 (8) (lead by 99)

17:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This will surely be Mark Wood’s last for now, and the quick looks to squeeze every bit of venom out of his fangs, striking Usman Khawaja on the shoulder as the batter flinches.

Khawaja blocks to mid-off, where there is no-one, and he should really get back for two as a fatiguing Wood wades through lactic acid to get after it. Travis Head, funnily enough, is keener on the second than his partner, who turns it down and leaves the new man to negotiate the last two balls of the over.

Fast and furious but Head safely makes it through to drinks.

Australia 72/3 (28), Travis Head 0, Usman Khawaja 35, Moeen Ali 2-17 (8) (lead by 98)

17:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And just when things had seemed oh so quiet. Headingley is hopping as Travis Head ambles out.

OUT! Steve Smith c Duckett b Ali 2 (9b 0x4 0x6), Australia 72/3 (27.4)

17:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Inconceivable! Steve Smith has given his wicket away too! 200 Test wickets for Moeen Ali!

Full and floaty from the off-spinner and how rarely do you see that from Smith, a weak whip gobbled up by Ben Duckett at midwicket.

Smith exchanges a word or two with an Englishman as he exits. It looks like there may have been something said by Jonny Bairstow towards him.

Australia 70/2 (27), Usman Khawaja 34, Steve Smith 1, Mark Wood 0-9 (7) (lead by 96)

17:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oh, that’s not far away at all from Mark Wood, Steve Smith getting only a scratch of the bat’s toe on the ball to save his shins from being blasted away. Smith is off the mark with Wood starting to look weary - he’s bowled four in this spell and stretches his hamstring as he wanders to his fielding spot.

Australia 68/2 (26), Usman Khawaja 33, Steve Smith 0, Moeen Ali 1-15 (7) (lead by 94)

17:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Utterly perplexing from Marnus Labuschagne - it’s not a shot he plays at all often in this format, either. Perhaps just a bit of impatience, maybe, thinking that he could get on the offensive with English heads started to hang after that Bairstow drop, but he’s opened the door just as Australia seemed to be pootling along quite comfortably.

OUT! Marnus Labuschagne c Brook b Ali 33 (77b 5x4 0x6), Australia 68/2 (25.2)

16:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Picks out deep square leg! What a curious shot!

All of the hard graft and Marnus Labuschagne throws away another opportunity to build a score in a series of fits and starts. It is tough to work out his plan here, launching a slog sweep on a pitch offering bounce but not turn. Harry Brook is stationed out in the deep and can scarcely believe it as a top edge tumbles down towards him - a flop forward to make certain. Labuschagne hauls himself off.

Australia 67/1 (25), Usman Khawaja 32, Marnus Labuschagne 33, Mark Wood 0-7 (6) (lead by 93)

16:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mark Wood tries to generate some rough for his partner, given what I think is an unofficial warning by the umpires for a follow through that continued towards the danger zone.

Dropped! Jonny Bairstow puts another one down! It’s a really diffiult change, Marnus Labuschagne gloving a pull down the leg side, but Bairstow gets a full hand to it stretching to his left. Wood, lying prone after falling over, lifts his hands to his head.

Australia 66/1 (24), Usman Khawaja 31, Marnus Labuschagne 33, Moeen Ali 0-14 (6) (lead by 92)

16:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There’s no hurry for Australia, of course, at this juncture, with more than three days left. The threat of rain won’t bother them, either, given a draw will keep the urn in the cupboard for another couple of years.

Moeen Ali isn’t finding too much uneven ground to land his off-breaks in. That one that leapt away from Usman Khawaja a couple of overs ago is the only ball that’s really bit for the spinner so far.

Australia 63/1 (23), Usman Khawaja 29, Marnus Labuschagne 32, Mark Wood 0-6 (5) (lead by 89)

16:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Time for a bit of bumper cars, Ben Stokes pushing the field back as Mark Wood tries to break this partnership. The Khawaja-Labuschagne union reaches 50 as the leftie gets up on his toes and taps into the offside for a single.

Jimmy Peirson, Australia’s back-up wicketkeeper on this tour with Josh Inglis away on paternity leave, trots on in a bright orange bib carrying a new set of gloves and a bottle, but is sent back by the umpires. Odd from Peirson, running out mid-over - he’s eventually allowed out there at the end of it for a quick catch-up with a pair of Queensland colleagues.

Australia 59/1 (22), Usman Khawaja 27, Marnus Labuschagne 30, Moeen Ali 0-11 (5) (lead by 85)

16:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Excellent work from Wood, staying switched on at deep point and rounding the boundary to cut off an Usman Khawaja cut that had seemed destined for the cover fence. The two batters are slow to turn for a third and eventually turn it down - two runs saved.

All rather calm out there, but the top brass of the Barmy Army are trying to get things going, the trumpet lubricated and starting to toot.

Australia 57/1 (21), Usman Khawaja 25, Marnus Labuschagne 30, Mark Wood 0-2 (4) (lead by 83)

16:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mark Wood is back, looking to reignite a few first day fireworks. He’s around the wicket to the left-handed Usman Khawaja but starts at his hip, with Khawaja tucking it down to fine leg.

Pure pace can be a capricious beast, and it’s not quite happening for Wood today. He’s been economical, but these two have looked in control against him, speeds ever-so-slightly down and short of yesterday’s X-factor. Still plenty of time yet for the fast show this evening, though.

Australia 56/1 (20), Usman Khawaja 24, Marnus Labuschagne 30, Moeen Ali 0-9 (4) (lead by 82)

16:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Marnus Labuschagne is furious with himself, slapping a full toss he could have heaved to Leeds city centre straight to mid-off to miss out on a scoring opportunity.

He makes up for it next ball, fast footwork getting him into position to carve Moeen backward of square. He goes to repeat the shot at the end of the over, but a sprawling Harry Brook saves his bowler from conceding four more.

Australia 50/1 (19), Usman Khawaja 23, Marnus Labuschagne 25, Stuart Broad 1-23 (7) (lead by 76)

16:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A bob each way from Ben Stokes, stationing himself on the gully but Ben Duckett down at deep backward point, ready for a Marnus Labuschagne slash.

Past Stokes’s paw! Another Labuschagne edge falls short of the catchers and Stokes can’t claw it in on the bounce to his left. Through the gap for four.

Australia 45/1 (18), Usman Khawaja 23, Marnus Labuschagne 20, Moeen Ali 0-3 (3) (lead by 71)

16:26 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Blimey. Moeen Ali finds both turn and bounce, the delivery spiking up like a spooked porcupine’s spines as Usman Khawaja goes back to thwack it. Definite signs that this dry pitch may be starting to deteriorate.

Australia 44/1 (17), Usman Khawaja 23, Marnus Labuschagne 19, Stuart Broad 1-18 (6) (lead by 70)

16:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Floaty from Stuart Broad, generous in offering Labuschagne a wide half-volley. The batter tucks in, driving elegantly through extra cover.

Excellent comeback! More hints of variable bounce as the surface perhaps starts to misbehave, Broad’s ball spitting in the ear of Labuschange’s bat and diverting safe thanks only to a friendly flick off the bicep.

Australia 39/1 (16), Usman Khawaja 23, Marnus Labuschagne 14, Moeen Ali 0-2 (2) (lead by 65)

16:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

England keep mid-off and mid-on up for Marnus Labuschagne, clearing the runway if he wishes to file a flightplan. There are few signs of him taking the aerial route, though, getting a lunge in to smother Moeen into the off-side with the bowler around the wicket to both batters.

Australia 37/1 (15), Usman Khawaja 22, Marnus Labuschagne 13, Stuart Broad 1-13 (5) (lead by 63)

16:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Four down through third, a meaty outside edge from a defending Marnus Labuschagne but no real danger as it plunges immediately after contact. England don’t have a gully, with Ben Duckett as quite a fine backward point.

Two slips and one around the corner but Labuschagne is solidly in behind it as Broad aims for his pads.

Australia 33/1 (14), Usman Khawaja 22, Marnus Labuschagne 9, Moeen Ali 0-0 (1) (lead by 59)

16:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Australia may try to get after Moeen as this innings continues, not allowing Ben Stokes to use his spinner in a holding role if his seam attack continues to only be three-strong. No signs of intent from an easy-going Usman Khawaja - six putts into the covers in a maiden.

It will indeed be a switch of ends for Stuart Broad.

Australia 33/1 (13), Usman Khawaja 22, Marnus Labuschagne 9, Joe Root 0-4 (1) (lead by 59)

16:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ben Stokes is at slip as he tries to protect his wounded rump, while Ollie Robinson is on close catching duties for the left-handed Khawaja, too, perahps indicating that his back is not totally healed - though he does have a large pair of mitts, the seamer.

Root finds little to excite him in the Headingley surface, the two batters picking him off for a series of singles. Twin spin, probably briefly - Moeen Ali at the other end.

Australia 29/1 (12), Usman Khawaja 20, Marnus Labuschagne 7 (lead by 55)

16:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s was fast, furious and fun at Headingley in that second session - we’re rattling along in this Test match, which might be useful given a grotty weekend forecast.

It is, forgive the cliche, a vital session, just the latest in this nip-and-tuck series. This is a great chasing ground, with plenty of recent examples of sizeable fourth innings scores both internationally and in the County Championship, so Australia will need plenty to feel at all safe.

Ollie Robinson is back among England’s fielders for the start of the evening session. Is he able to bowl? We’ll find out in a bit but for now it will be, surprisingly, Joe Root, perhaps to allow a switch of ends for Stuart Broad.

Tea: Australia have start their innings slowly, but England will be hoping the final session of the day can bring more breakthroughs.

With bat in hand, Stokes made a mammoth 80, batting at times on one leg, the England captain led from the front and dragged his side to within 26 runs of Australia’s first-innings total.

Australia 29/1 (12), Usman Khawaja 20, Marnus Labuschagne 7, Stuart Broad 1-9 (4) (lead by 55)

15:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad is cleared to return to the England attack, taking over from Chris Woakes to clomp up the hill.

Through the over he goes in unhurried fashion, happy enough to trundle through to tea.

Australia 27/1 (11), Usman Khawaja 19, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Mark Wood 0-1 (3) (lead by 53)

15:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A rather optimistic appeal from England, Mark Wood over the wicket and wide of the crease to the left-handed Usman Khawaja and thus always likely to pitch the ball outside the line of leg stump.

Wood looks a little heavy footed here, trudging back to his mark with a weary plod. That’ll lift his spirits, though, drawing Labuschagne into a shot the batter really doesn’t need to play, a reckless drive almost bring about his downfall. Labuschagne mutters in self-reproach with tea five minutes away.

Australia 26/1 (10), Usman Khawaja 19, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Chris Woakes 0-18 (5) (lead by 52)

15:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad enters into an animated conversation with umpire Kumar Dharmasena, the former Sri Lanka all-rounder not permitting the England seamer to bowl after spending time off the field for a trip to the cobblers. Broad, bowling boot mended, tries to argue his case but eventually drags himself up to mid-off.

Just one from Chris Woakes’s over.

Australia 25/1 (9), Usman Khawaja 18, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Mark Wood 0-1 (2) (lead by 51)

15:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Marnus Labuschagne jabs his lightsaber out at Mark Wood as he ducks beneath a bumper. Better so far from the Australia number three against Wood.

Australia 25/1 (8), Usman Khawaja 18, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Chris Woakes 0-17 (4) (lead by 51)

15:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Usman Khawaja has started calmly, laconically nurdling four fine of the deep fielder backward square on the leg side. Ben Stokes re-considers the field, sticking a catcher around the corner for that short to allow Chris Woakes to continue to attack Khawaja’s pads and poles.

Beaten! Good from Woakes, standing one up on the angle and beating Khawaja’s outside edge.

Australia 21/1 (7), Usman Khawaja 14, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Mark Wood 0-1 (1) (lead by 47)

15:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A leg slip and three off-side cordon catchers for Mark Wood, who is slightly slow to get going - all 24 balls in his first spell yesterday were upwards of 90mph but he’s only (only) at 88mph here. Pedestrian, really.

Whoosh! Wood ratchets things up to Labuschagne and sends one shrieking past his nose.

Australia 20/1 (6), Usman Khawaja 13, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Chris Woakes 0-13 (3) (lead by 46)

15:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Off the splice but safe! Chris Woakes gets one to bounce a touch, Marnus Labuschagne perhaps not quite picking the length to excacerbate the lift and rather lucky that the ball loops down five yards short of backward point.

And here is Mark Wood. Speed guns at the ready.

Australia 19/1 (5), Usman Khawaja 12, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Stuart Broad 1-7 (3) (lead by 45)

15:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad is off for a new set of spikes at the end of the over, Ben Stokes walking with his bowler to the boundary, perhaps pondering if it’s worth bringing Mark Wood on early after that thrilling spell to Marnus Labuschagne in the first innings.

Australia 18/1 (4), Usman Khawaja 11, Marnus Labuschagne 6, Chris Woakes 0-12 (2) (lead by 44)

15:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Headingley crowd are into this now having been given something to celebrate since lunch after England’s passive morning session. Marnus Labuschagne is happy to leave on length, wearing one near the nether regions as Chris Woakes nips one back.

Australia 15/1 (3), Usman Khawaja 10, Marnus Labuschagne 4, Stuart Broad 1-6 (2) (lead by 41)

15:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This will test Marnus Labuschagne, Leeds lifting the volume as Stuart Broad’s knees pump. It’s been a lean series so far for Australia’s number three.

That might settle him a little, a checked drive straight of mid-off. Labuschagne saves his legs as the new ball scurries over this immaculate outfield.

OUT! David Warner c Crawley b Broad 1 (5b 0x4 0x6), Australia 11/1 (2.2)

14:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad gets David Warner for a 17th time!

It’s a carbon copy of the first innings dismissal, caught Crawley, bowled Broad - Warner is squared up trying to tuck a length ball to leg from Stuart Broad, pecking the edge again. Zak Crawley just about grasps it and Marnus Labuschagne is in early as Headingley finds its voice.

Australia 11/0 (2), Usman Khawaja 10, David Warner 1, Chris Woakes 0-9 (1) (lead by 37)

14:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A shooter! David Warner produces a wry smile as he tugs right over the top of Chris Woakes’s first ball, which keeps incredibly low. The heavy roller was on between innings - that’s the first variable bounce we’ve seen in this Test match, I think.

England launch half an appeal as the ball loops into Ben Stokes’s hands in the gully, but that went uncontacted through to Warner’s thigh pad and a review is wisely declined.

Eek. The gentlemen in the crowd wince as Usman Khawaja gets one in the delicates, another ball perhaps keeping a little low. That’s a nice way to respond, though, two boundaries in a row closing the over - too straight from Woakes and tucked off the toes, before a short ball is smashed through square leg.

Australia 2/0 (1), Usman Khawaja 1, David Warner 0, Stuart Broad 0-2 (1) (lead by 28)

14:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A little nurdle down to fine leg troubles the scorers for the first time in the innings.

No Mark Wood yet - Chris Woakes will share the new ball.

Australia 0/0 (0.1), Usman Khawaja 0, David Warner 0, Stuart Broad 0-0 (0.1) (lead by 26)

14:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

With Robinson off and Ben Stokes presumably not fit to bowl, that essentially leaves England down to three seamers, two of which are playing their first Test in a long while, and on a rock hard outfield.

Stuart Broad starts with a loosener outside off that Usman Khawaja leaves alone.

Australia 0/0 (0), Usman Khawaja 0, David Warner 0 (lead by 26)

14:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That last Steve Smith catch takes him level with Ian Botham on a record 54 catches in the Ashes, by the way.

An hour or so until tea for Australia’s top order to get through. This weird and wild series has rarely had placid periods but you fancy that’ll be exactly what the openers are after.

Down the steps Usman Khawaja and David Warner come. Mark Wood straps a plaster on a wound on his knee as he joins an England huddle that does not include Ollie Robinson - might the speedster get a go first up with the new ball?

End of Innings: Australia lead by 26

14:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Pat Cummins takes the applause of his teammates after finishing with his best Ashes figures of 6-91. Things went haywire in the last hour for Australia but they’ve secured what could be a vital lead, even if it is far smaller than it looked like being at lunch. Mark Wood got the fun started with some brilliant biffage before Ben Stokes donned his cape again to drag England up to something respectable.

Still, the cleanliness of that hitting spoke to the trueness of this pitch, and the sun is still very much shining at Headingley on what feels like an afternoon for batting. England’s attack haven’t had long to rest their legs, either - Ollie Robinson’s back looked still to be hobbling him with the bat.

OUT! Ben Stokes c Smith b Murphy 80 (108b 6x4 5x6), England 237 all out (trail by 26)

14:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Todd Murphy gets his man!

Another superhuman innings from Ben Stokes but he falls, stumbling back over his bat after slicing high to long-on. Steve Smith’s safe hands snaffle a fifth of the innings to give Murphy his first Ashes wicket - but England’s captain has given his side hope.

England 231/9 (52), Ollie Robinson 5, Ben Stokes 74, Pat Cummins 6-91 (18) (trail by 32)

14:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

These two have added 32 so far. That was the eighth over of Pat Cummins’s spell - he’s desperately seeking a first seven-for in Test cricket but you wonder if a change might be in the offing.

Not at the other end - Todd Murphy to twirl in once more.

England 230/9 (51.3), Ollie Robinson 5, Ben Stokes 73, Pat Cummins 6-90 (17.3) (trail by 33)

14:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Perfect from Ollie Robinson - he takes on a pull first up, getting it over midwicket for four, and then hustles through for a single as backward point fumbles. Robinson grabs his back after completing the run as Stokes gingerly tests out his own injury - England’s walking wounded continue to wear away at Australia’s lead.

England 225/9 (51), Ollie Robinson 0, Ben Stokes 73, Todd Murphy 0-30 (7) (trail by 38)

14:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ben Stokes just keeps on coming! Down the legside and helped all the way over fine leg for six, before a mistimed slog carries long-on easily as the England skipper re-finds his Headingley hitting range.

Good from Murphy at the end of the over, nearly beating Stokes by pushing one through outside off as he charges. Stokes tries to force off the back foot to long-off and keep the strike but can’t beat the bowler.

England 213/9 (50), Ollie Robinson 0, Ben Stokes 61, Pat Cummins 6-85 (17) (trail by 50)

14:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“Oh my god!” Ben Stokes cries as Pat Cummins beats him with an unplayable outswinger that just misses off peg.

Stokes manages to get a checked pull away to midwicket for one to steal the strike. England have narrowed the deficit down to 50.

England 212/9 (49), Ollie Robinson 0, Ben Stokes 60, Todd Murphy 0-18 (6) (trail by 51)

14:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ben Stokes is really limping now but has the presence of mind to get through for a single after he squirms the ball to Pat Cummins’s weaker left side at midwicket. Ollie Robinson responds promptly and is safely home.

50 for Ben Stokes! England 211/9 (48.2), Ollie Robinson 0, Ben Stokes 59, Todd Murphy 0-17 (5.2) (trail by 52)

Ben Stokes skips down twice and launches Todd Murphy back over the bowler’s head! 50 up for the England skipper - how many more can he get?

England 199/9 (48), Ollie Robinson 0, Ben Stokes 47, Pat Cummins 6-84 (16) (trail by 64)

14:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Robinson survives his first two balls. Todd Murphy will continue at the other end to try and finish things off.

OUT! Stuart Broad c Smith b Cummins 7 (8b 1x4 0x6), England 199/9 (47.4)

14:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Brilliantly taken in the deep! Steve Smith at fine leg!

A fourth catch in the innings for Smith in Test number 100, and this is a magnificent bit of work. Stuart Broad has a great hoick at a Pat Cummins bouncer, the top edge flying down to long leg. Marnus Labuschagne loses it but Smith watches it closely, a loud call keeping his colleague safely out of the way and allowing him to snaffle on his knees.

Six for Cummins. One more wicket would give him his best Test figures - and he’ll have Ollie Robinson and a spasming back to attack.

England 198/8 (47), Stuart Broad 7, Ben Stokes 46, Todd Murphy 0-5 (5) (trail by 66)

14:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Somehow, just one from the over as Stuart Broad again negotiates the final ball. Todd Murphy rubs his hand together on the walk back down to the boundary. Starc’s catch was a toughie but he’d have fancied pouching that caught and bowled chance.

England 197/8 (46.3), Stuart Broad 7, Ben Stokes 45, Todd Murphy 0-4 (4.3) (trail by 67)

14:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Dropped! Ben Stokes collapses in a heap after sending up a skier but Mitchell Starc, running in from long-off, can’t hang on!

And another is shelled! Slammed back at the bowler but Murphy can’t get a hand on it, skewing away off his thigh.

England 197/8 (45), Stuart Broad 7, Ben Stokes 45, Pat Cummins 5-83 (15) (trail by 66)

14:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Useful runs! Stuart Broad backs away but is good enough to get his hands through a half volley from Pat Cummins, skewing it just out of Scott Boland’s reach at cover with the field set for the short ball attack.

And England are flying - an impeccably timed cut by Ben Stokes before a wild delivery from Cummins swerves away from Alex Carey for five wides.

Australia losing their way. Cummins oversteps, which does grant him an extra ball at Broad - but it is fended safely away into the legside.

Cummins goes to his Ashes debutant in an attempt to restore some calm. Todd Murphy to toss up a few tempters.

England 181/8 (45), Stuart Broad 2, Ben Stokes 40, Mitchell Starc 2-59 (14) (trail by 82)

13:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Back-to-back boundaries from Ben Stokes, not in full swinging shape due to that glure injury but still a danger here to Australia. A tickle beats fine leg, who is wide, to the fence and the pull that follows is ferocious.

And another! Starc goes searching for a yorker but gifts the left-hander a full toss, which is flogged backward of point for four.

England 168/8 (44), Stuart Broad 1, Ben Stokes 28, Pat Cummins 5-67 (14) (trail by 95)

13:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes are together again. You’d think that Broad will have a bit more licence to thrill than at Lord’s. He’s squared up first ball but gets an outside edge down to a fly slip for a single.

Cummins hides one down the leg side to trap England’s number ten on strike.

OUT! Mark Wood c Marsh b Cummins 24 (8b 1x4 3x6), England 167/8 (43.4)

13:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A good time, but not a long time - Mark Wood gives Pat Cummins his fifth wicket!

A first Test five-for in England for the Australia captain, and richly reseved. Wood’s hack lands in Mitchell Marsh’s hands and the fun is over.

England 167/7 (43.2), Mark Wood 24, Ben Stokes 28, Pat Cummins 4-66 (13.2) (trail by 96)

13:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wood’s fun continues! A blind top edge for six more to bring the deficit down below 100!

England 160/7 (43), Mark Wood 18, Ben Stokes 27, Mitchell Starc 2-46 (13) (trail by 103)

13:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chuckles all round as Wood then gives himself oodles of room and finds an off-stump yorker entirely out of his reach. It just about misses.

Bashed through the covers for a couple more! Wood has 18 off his first five balls.

England 158/7 (42.4), Mark Wood 16, Ben Stokes 27, Mitchell Starc 2-38 (12.4) (trail by 105)

13:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Hello! Mark Wood signals his intent, clearing the front dog and ready for some heave-ho! 6,4,6! A brilliant, brutal blow over midwicket, a thrash through backward point and then a high hook to long leg!

England 142/7 (42.1) (trail by 121)

13:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The players are back out there, Mark Wood joining his captain at the crease ahead of Stuart Broad. Ollie Robinson will bat, but that spasming back suggests he may not contribute much. Will there be a twist from England’s tail? Is Ben Stokes physically capable of something Lord’s like?

Men out on the hook and for the uppercut as Mitchell Starc loads up again.

Yorkshire chief executive hopeful of securing club’s financial future

13:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Yorkshire chief executive Stephen Vaughan hopes to secure the club’s financial future within a matter of weeks, but admits he had to “kiss a lot of frogs” before finding a suitable investor.

The county owes the Graves Family Trust nearly £15million and also faces a hefty fine following a CDC investigation into historic racism, with Vaughan working on refinancing the debt ever since he took over in November.

Former chair Colin Graves angrily withdrew his own interest in returning after claiming he had been treated as a “last resort”, while former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, backers of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals and Prince Badr of Saudi Arabia are among a long list of those linked with Yorkshire.

LUNCH: England 142/7 (42.1) (trail by 121)

13:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It feels like England have rather been hoisted by their own petard here. Ben Stokes ordered quick pitches this summer but Australia’s fast and nasties are predictably doing the damage on a deck providing plenty of home comforts, spice and spite in this surface exciting Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc particularly. They’ve been excellent so far, the visiting quicks, Headingley totally subdued as a tame, teetering England fiddled and flapped their way into a real predicament.

Does Stokes have something super-human in him in a past miracle milieu? An apparent issue in his lower back or glute would suggest not, but his side need rescuing from the mire.

Sonia Twigg at Headingley

13:02 , Sonia Twigg

England have collapsed in that morning session, and all hopes of reaching parity or something resembling a first innings total close to that of Australias are all but in tatters.

They made some mistakes with the bat and allowed Australia to make the crucial inroads.

The Western Terrace has been kept quiet, something that all but sums up the morning. It will be a long way back into this match for Ben Stokes’ side.

Although the captain remains unbeaten on 27, he is rapidly running out of batting partners.

OUT! Chris Woakes c †Carey b Starc 10 (10b 0x4 1x6), England 142/7 (42.1)

12:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Gone this time! Chris Woakes reviews but there’s a spike on UltraEdge!

England’s morning session gets even worse, a second happy hooker coming a cropper. Short, quick, and Woakes is backing away even before Mitchell Starc delivers, a thin nick through gobbled up gleefully by Alex Carey.

England 142/6 (41), Chris Woakes 10, Ben Stokes 27, Pat Cummins 4-59 (13) (trail by 121)

12:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Have that! Mahoosive from Chris Woakes, taking on the short ball and getting every piece of it to clobber Pat Cummins into the Western Terrace.

A less convincing attempt at a second bit of humpty-dumpty, but Australia have nobody in the ring on the legside and Woakes’s top edge lands safe.

England 133/6 (41), Chris Woakes 1, Ben Stokes 27, Mitchell Starc 1-28 (12) (trail by 130)

12:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Woakes lays bat on a bumper, tugging to square leg to get off the mark.

Australia want to go after him, though, bringing up the field to try and trap the England number eight on strike. A nasty nip-backer ensures Stokes can’t get a single away, the left-hander forced down to his knees for a third time today after being struck in the midriff.

England 132/6 (40.3), Chris Woakes 0, Ben Stokes 27, Mitchell Starc 1-27 (11.3) (trail by 131)

12:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Yikes. Angry and accurate from Mitchell Starc, up towards the armpit and not particularly competently played by Chris Woakes, grille rattled as he ducks into it.

The short ball is proving useful again for Australia.

England 131/6 (40), Chris Woakes 0, Ben Stokes 26, Pat Cummins 4-50 (12) (trail by 132)

12:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Pretty dozy from Moeen, who rather sauntered into Australia’s trap just as he and Stokes were starting to get somewhere with their steady partnership.

Chris Woakes can also be vulnerable against the short stuff, and gets a snorter first up, jabbing his hands down just in time as it fizzes past his nose through to Alex Carey. He switches tack second ball, swiping wildly but failing to connect.

OUT! Moeen Ali c Smith b Cummins 21 (46b 2x4 0x6), England 131/6 (39.4)

12:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This time it lands in Australian hands!

Moeen Ali doesn’t learn from his error. It’s a subtle tweak of the field from Pat Cummins, inserting Steve Smith on the spot where that last half-hook landed. Same ball, same shot, and down the gullet it goes.

England 130/5 (39.2), Moeen Ali 21, Ben Stokes 24, Pat Cummins 3-49 (11.2) (trail by 133)

12:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Moeen Ali gets lucky! He tries to check his shot as Pat Cummins bangs it in, but up it goes nonetheless off the top edge. Fine leg and long leg start their sprints but Alex Carey ends up the closest, still ten yards or so away as it lands in open pasturage.

England 129/5 (39), Moeen Ali 20, Ben Stokes 24, Mitchell Starc 1-26 (11) (trail by 134)

12:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mitchell Starc replaces Todd Murphy, waiting at the top of his mark as Ben Stokes is seen to. I’m not sure who would captain England in the second innings and beyond if this issue persists and prevents Stokes taking full part as a fielder - Ollie Pope was their official vice-captain, and the set-up are said to like Zak Crawley’s gumption, but it’s an environment strangely short of alternative leaders. Joe Root is probably best qualified, but was rather happy to relinquish the role last year.

Moeen, of course, has captained England in white ball cricket and is managing this situation well. He has 20 of a partnership now worth 42 as he and Stokes settle in and soak up the summer sun.

England 126/5 (38), Moeen Ali 18, Ben Stokes 24, Pat Cummins 3-48 (11) (trail by 137)

12:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Captain to captain as Pat Cummins returns. Ben Stokes is hobbling now, signalling up to the balcony and requesting analgesic assistance after a controlled pull to long leg for one.

Oh, that’s pretty. Moeen produces one of his seductive strokes of the back foot, punching through the covers to the boundary. Ben Stokes follows his lede - his four is flicked as England start to get the scoreboard moving.

England 116/5 (37), Moeen Ali 13, Ben Stokes 19, Todd Murphy 0-4 (4) (trail by 147)

12:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Todd Murphy immediately strikes you as a very organised cricketer - I thought he looked better than most against Mark Wood’s thunderbolts yesterday before he dragged on, and he’s swiftly assessed this surface, recognising that the lack of turn makes skid the danger and pushing it through. A strangled appeal as Moeen plays with bat and pad together, but the first sound was wooden.

England 115/5 (36), Moeen Ali 13, Ben Stokes 18, Scott Boland 0-35 (10) (trail by 148)

12:26 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Moeen Ali chips through square leg, one of Australia’s slippers briefly excited, forgetting that fielder is back on the fence. Out it trickles to the deep as England’s batters trade three singles in the over.

Steve Smith collects at second slip as Moeen edges one with soft hands.

England 112/5 (35), Moeen Ali 12, Ben Stokes 16, Todd Murphy 0-3 (3) (trail by 151)

12:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A yelped miaow from Todd Murphy as Ben Stokes swipes beneath a ball that bounces more than he’s expected, England’s skipper down early for the sweep but the spring in this Australian-style surface beating him. He looks in a degree of discomfort, Stokes, teeth showing as he stretches his hindquarters after jogging a single.

An inspection of the derriere from the doctor, too, before Stokes is cleared to wander up to the non-striker’s end as Moeen Ali faces up to Scott Boland. He’s not necessarily thrilling, Boland, but there’s something pleasing about his metre, repeatable and agreeable and ever the threat outside off.

Moeen Ali at last chances something in the channel - and that’s beautifully played, the elbow high and the timing crisp as he cover drives on the up.

England 107/5 (33), Moeen Ali 8, Ben Stokes 15, Todd Murphy 0-2 (2) (trail by 156)

12:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Tight and tidy from Todd Murphy, no real turn but a bit of drift to threaten the inside edge. That prompts the intoduction of a short leg, Marnus Labuschagne yabbering away as he plonks himself in tight by Ben Stokes’s hip.

Stokes ventures down for the first time against Murphy, a canny drag-back of length forcing an adjustment from the England captain, blocking back to the bowler. He appears to have hurt himself, too - on comes the medic to prod at a sore hip as Stokes grimaces.

England 106/5 (32), Moeen Ali 7, Ben Stokes 15, Scott Boland 0-28 (8) (trail by 157)

Scott Boland continues to look threatening, particularly to Moeen Ali, bobbing two balls by the left-hander’s blade as two slips and a gully ready their mitts.
