Arsenal vs PSV LIVE: Europa League result, final score and reaction as Xhaka strike gives Gunners the win

Arsenal continued their perfect form in Europe this season while extending their winning run to eight matches in all competitions as Granit Xhaka struck the winner in a 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

The hosts dominated the first half but could not test Walter Benitez in the PSV goal, with the sides locked at 0-0 at the interval. Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock with 20 minutes to go, Xhaka finishing with aplomb from just inside the PSV box, with the midfielder’s goal securing Arsenal’s place in the knockout stages.

And the result moves Arsenal five points clear of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV in Group A, ahead of their return match against the Dutch side next Thursday where they can secure top spot with at least a draw. Before then, Mikel Arteta’s side will visit Southampton in the Premier League.

45+1 mins: Nothing to separate the two teams as half-time arrives. PSV had defended well but the Gunners have lacked a bit of rhythm and verve.

Arsenal 0-0 PSV

18:42 , Michael Jones

18:41 , Michael Jones

39 mins: Chance! Bukayo Saka cuts inside from the right and shifts away from three defenders on his way into the box. He lays the ball to Eddie Nketiah who darts on into the six-yard area and wins a corner when the defender sends it out of play.

Arsenal 0-0 PSV

18:34 , Michael Jones

Arsenal 0-0 PSV

18:16 , Michael Jones

15 mins: PSV haven’t gotten themselves into the game just yet but they’re having a decent period of possession here. It’s mainly being knocked around at the back before a threaded pass comes to Xavi Simons.

He storms through the middle of the pitch before feeding an aerial pass over to Cody Gakpo on the left. Gakpo looks to take on Tomiyasu but decides against it and sends the ball backwards.

Arsenal 0-0 PSV

18:13 , Michael Jones

12 mins: Chance! Arsenal display a bit of urgency with Takehiro Tomiyasu dinking the ball over the top for Saka. Saka’s cross finds Nketiah but he can only turn it over to the arriving Tierney who belts an effort high over the crossbar!

Martin Odegaard pinpoints key to Arsenal’s superb start to the season

17:43 , Michael Jones

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has hailed the club’s “winning mentality” after they continued their fine start to the season with a narrow Europa League victory at Bodo/Glimt.

Bukayo Saka’s fortuitous first-half goal was enough to seal a 1-0 win in the Arctic Circle as the Gunners made it 11 victories from 12 games.

Odegaard started in his native Norway as boss Mikel Arteta shuffled his pack with one eye on Sunday’s tricky trip to Leeds.

With the World Cup truncating the club calendar, Arsenal have so far managed their squad well with only a 3-1 loss at Manchester United blotting their copy book.

Odegaard believes the mindset within the squad is behind the recent run and, despite sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, he insists no one is taking anything for granted.

Van Nistelrooy on Arsenal

17:37 , Michael Jones

Ruud van Nistelrooy says that Arsenal have had an amazing start to the season and sees tonight’s game as an opportunity foe his team to test themselves against the Premier League leaders.

"They’ve had a great start. Ten games in the season, with nine wins, it’s an amazing start from them, the way they are playing.” said the PSV boss,

"[Mikel] Arteta is developing his team with his style of play and he has done well with a young side - it’s a very promising team that’s a joy to watch.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to come here and test ourselves."

Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to wrap up Europa League progress to ‘skip two matches’

17:21 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal players to make short work of their Europa League group and earn some time off as they prepare to host PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.

Arsenal have won their opening three Group A fixtures and a victory over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Eredivisie outfit will see them qualify for the knockout stages and put them on the cusp of topping the group.

Winning the group is rewarded with a bye for the round of 32, something which could prove even more vital in a season where a winter World Cup has truncated the calendar.

Arteta has rotated in the Europa League this year but not to the extent many expected, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba all starting last week’s win away at Bodo/Glimt.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits his touchline behaviour can sometimes make for difficult viewing – and accepts all managers have a huge responsibility to try to keep their emotions under control.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been charged with improper behaviour by the Football Association following his sending off during the 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Klopp was shown a red card for his angry reaction towards referee Anthony Taylor and one of his assistants after Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was not awarded a foul following a challenge by Bernardo Silva.

‘I expect a warm welcome’

16:36 , Michael Jones

As part of the pre-match build-up Ruud van Nistelrooy joked that he is expecting a ‘warm welcome’ from Arsenal fans when he brings his team, PSV Eindhoven, tonight.

Van Nistelrooy famously missed a last-minute penalty for Manchester United against Arsenal during the Gunners’ ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003/04, with the match finishing 0-0.

"I expect a warm welcome," he said, "I kept them invincible because of my miss.

"It’s 20 years ago now. It doesn’t define me but coming back to England and to Arsenal, memories come back of my time there and those two infamous games are part of it."

PSV Eindhoven are one of the Netherlands’ biggest clubs, and have won 24 league titles as well as both the European Cup in 1987/88 and the Uefa Cup in 1977/78.

They have appeared in Europe in every season since 1975/76, meaning this will be their 49th straight campaign doing so.

Last season saw them finish second-place in the Eredivisie, behind Ajax, as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League where they fell to Leicester City.

They did win the Dutch Cup though and came from behind to beat Ajax 2-1.

Arteta hoping to top Group A

16:20 , Michael Jones

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, says that his team must take the opportunity to finish top of their Europa League group and avoid a playoff match to reach latter stages of the tournamen in February.

"When you have a chance to take advantage you have to do it," said Arteta."You don’t know what happens in the next game. It will be a really tough match.

"Where we want to be is at the top and the best team in this country.

"In order to do that you will meet teams that want to beat you and build that rivalry to a different level. We are already experiencing things like that."

Arsenal’s hectic schedule good preparation for after World Cup

16:14 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta believes the way his Arsenal side are dealing with an intense fixture schedule will hold them in good stead for after the World Cup.

The Gunners travel to Leeds on Sunday, fresh from a 1-0 Europa League win at Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

That journey to Elland Road via the Arctic Circle is the latest of two fixtures in three days for a side that currently sit top of the Premier League, having won 11 of 12 games in all competitions.

The first-ever winter World Cup will halt any progress Arsenal make between now and mid-November, with fixture lists truncated after the finals to ensure the season still finishes in good time.

This fixutre was originally due to be played on Thursday 15th September but had to be postponed due to ‘the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.’

PSV travel to the Emirates stadium tonight before hosting Mikel Arteta’s side next week as well. These two games will decide which of these teams will finish at the top of Group A.

Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven

14:20 , Michael Jones

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s rearranged Europa League fixture between Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven.

The Gunners are unbeaten in Europe’s second competition this season with three wins from their three matches so far but they face their biggest test against the Dutch side tonight. PSV Eindhoven are second in Group A - two points behind Arsenal - but will move to the top of the group if they defeat the Gunners.

Whichever team manages to top their qualifying group will be automatically entered into the round of 16 with the second placed sides having to win a playoff game against the demoted Champions League teams to progress so finishing top is crucial. Arsenal will go five points clear with a win this evening and would need just one point from the return fixture against PSV next week to clinch the group.
