Arsenal vs Brighton LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Arsenal vs Brighton - LIVE!

Arsenal put in a dominant display to return to winning ways as they saw off Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were well-beaten by Roberto De Zerbi's men in the corresponding fixture last season, all-but ending their Premier League title charge in the process.

This 2-0 victory in an entertaining contest - coming after defeat at Aston Villa eight days ago - would have helped banish some of the ghosts of that defeat while keeping Mikel Arteta's side very much in the mix at the top of the table. Gabriel Jesus' all-round game was exceptional throughout but it was his back-post header from close-range that broke the deadlock, before a cool Kai Havertz finish wrapped up the three points for Arsenal - who also become the first team to prevent Brighton scoring in a league game this season.

Brighton's best chance of the afternoon fell to Pascal Gross with eight minutes to go and but he could only turn Kaoru Mitoma's low centre wide when presented with a huge opportunity to equalise and soon after and the points were secured by Havertz, the Germany international finishing with aplomb after being slipped in by substitute Eddie Nketiah as Arsenal eased through the remaining minutes to secure victory.

This had all the makings of an afternoon of frustration for Arsenal and a throwback to the days of Arsene Wenger.

They dominated Brighton during the first half here at Emirates Stadium, so much so the visitors did not have a single shot on goal.

But Arsenal had nothing to show for it and you could sense where the narrative was going, with the January transfer window opening in just two weeks.

There have long been calls for Mikel Arteta to sign another striker to make Arsenal more ruthless in attack and this first-half display did little to silence that argument.

The frustration was building after the break and felt close to boiling over when Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard tried to walk the ball into the net.

From the resulting corner, though, any anger at the Emirates swiftly evaporated and fittingly it was thanks to Gabriel Jesus.

Post-match thoughts from Kai Havertz

"They play very nice football. It’s tough to play against them. We knew we’re strong at our house here. Today it went quite well.

"I’m happy as an offensive player, it’s always nice to score or assist. The first one or two months were difficult but I tried to get the best out of myself every day."

Nketiah eyes deep Champions League run

13:43 , Matt Verri

Eddie Nketiah says Arsenal fear no one in the Champions League knockout stage and insists the Gunners have the quality to go all the way in Europe this season.

Arsenal will be seeded for Monday’s last-16 draw, having secured top spot in Group B with time to spare.

Only 11 members of their squad had played in the Champions League before this season, but they have quickly adapted and are now fourth favourites with the bookmakers to win the competition, behind Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

“We are relishing the next round of games,” said Nketiah. “Playing in this competition, you are always going to get tough draws. Every team in this competition is good and earned the right to play here.

“There is no point being in a competition if you don’t dream to win. We have the quality to do so and we are pushing every day to win every tournament that we enter and play in.

“That’s our aim and that’s the aim of Arsenal Football Club. That’s what the fans want and we are working every day to try and achieve that dream. My dream is to win all of it."

Pre-match thoughts from Lewis Dunk

13:39 , Matt Verri

Brighton looking to pick up yet another positive result against the Gunners, having only lost three of the past 12 matches between the sides.

Welbeck back in north London

13:30 , Matt Verri

Almost two months since Danny Welbeck last played, when he limped off after 16 minutes against Manchester City.

He's back on the Brighton bench this afternoon, looking to feature at some point.

Welbeck spent five years at Arsenal, scoring 16 Premier League goals across that period.

Arteta: You must suffer to win games

13:23 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta believes the Premier League is more competitive this season than ever before.

His Arsenal side led the table for 248 days last term but were pipped to the post by eventual champions Manchester City.

Their title hopes were effectively ended on May 14 when the Gunners lost 3-0 to Brighton, who they host this afternoon.

Arteta was reminded that Brighton, West Ham and Aston Villa are not members of the so-called established ‘big six’ yet all finished top of their Europa League or Europa Conference League groups in midweek.

Asked whether the Premier League is therefore becoming tougher than ever, Arteta replied: “I think so. Not only with those teams, but you have to really sweat and suffer to win any game in this league.

"You have examples every week. The margins of how teams are winning games, it’s minimal.”

Arsenal stars return

As expected, the likes of Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus are all back in the starting lineup for Arsenal after being rested in midweek.

Gabriel Martinelli has recovered from illness and starts too, with Davis Raya returning in goal.

No Jorginho on the bench - he misses out due to a foot problem.

Brighton have Danny Welbeck back in the squad, he's named among the substitutes on his return to north London.

Havertz has found his feet

12:44 , Matt Verri

When Kai Havertz finally got back to the dressing room after his winning goal for Arsenal at Brentford last month, he was hit by a wave of noise.

The German had been doing post-match interviews, with broadcasters unsurprisingly wanting to hear from the man of the moment.

Once inside the dressing room, Havertz was mobbed by his team-mates and Shakira's Waka Waka was being played at full volume.

The official song of the 2010 World Cup has become a regular chant on the terraces, with Arsenal fans changing the chorus to "£60million down the drain, Kai Havertz scores again".

That 89th-minute winner at Brentford feels like a turning point for Havertz. The 24-year-old midfielder has scored three goals in his past six games and heads into this afternoon's match full of confidence.

Fair to say that this probably isn't a match that Arsenal look forward to.

Arteta: I must not be treated differently

12:21 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta says he should not be looked at differently after dodging a touchline ban for criticising VAR.

Arteta called it “embarrassing and a disgrace” that Anthony Gordon’s goal against Arsenal last month stood. He felt VAR should have intervened and disallowed what proved to be the winning goal for Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

His comments earned him an FA charge for an alleged breach of FA Rule E3.1, but an independent regulatory commission cleared him on Thursday.

Asked whether he might be perceived differently after escaping a ban, Arteta said: “This cannot happen, because if you haven’t been [punished], they have to look at your exactly the same.

“But it’s who I am as a person and the love I have for my club, my players. And a lot of times we have shown a lot of respect for everybody — whether it’s an opponent, a referee, other clubs, an institution.

“We are there to defend and support them as well.”

Wright announces Match of the Day decision

12:13 , Matt Verri

Ian Wright will step down as a pundit from Match of the Day at the end of the season.

The Arsenal legend said the decision “had been coming for a while” and was “fast-tracked” by turning 60 last month.

Wright said: “Ultimately, it's time to do a few more different things with my Saturdays.”

Wright made his debut on Match of the Day as a player in 1997 and has had two spells as a regular pundit, first from 2002 to 2008 and then since he returned in 2015.

Brighton team news

Danny Welbeck is set to be involved in the squad for the visitors, while Brighton did not pick up any fresh injury concerns in the midweek win over Marseille.

Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “I don’t know the first XI but we have to recover mental energies, physical energies and then tomorrow morning I will decide the first XI.

“We have no new injuries. The players who played in the Europa League feel good at the moment and I think we have no problem.

“Welbeck can be available to come on the bench and to play one part of the game.”
