Arrow girls improve to 7-2 on the season by sweeping dual against the Bulldogs

Tuesday's other area sports highlights included Watertown High School's 9-0 girls tennis win over Milbank and runner-up finishes by Deubrook Area's Landon Johnson and Arlington's Kaelyn Ulschmid during the Jesse James Cross Country meet at Garretson.

Watertown 9, Milbank 0 (Tennis)

MILBANK — Watertown improved its dual record to 7-2 with the sweep.

The Arrows won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches in straight sets. Sophia Nichols won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles and also did the same in No. 2 doubles with partner Faith Berg.

"It was nice to get back on the courts again," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink. "The girls played well today and the weather held off just long enough to get the matches in."

Watertown plays Rapid City Central on Friday in Brookings and then faces Rapid City Stevens and Huron on Saturday at Huron.

Cross Country

GARRETSON — Deubrook Area and Arlington were the only two area schools to compete in the meet that was held Tuesday at the River Ridge Golf Course.

Dylan Gerdes of Madison won the boys' 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes and 1.84 seconds. Johnson was second in 18:25.21. Colton Trooien added a ninth-place finish (out of 48 runners) for Deubrook Area. His time was 19:26.75. Lance Kaufmann led Arlington by placing 17th (20:08.83).

Faith Wiese won the girls' 5,000 in 19:19.32 and Ulschmid followed in 20:35.46. Madalyn Madsen added a ninth-place finish (22:28.25) for Arlington. Halley Miller was 16th (23:48.65).

Madison's boys and Flandreau's girls won team titles.
