The Arizona Republic's Super 10 girls high school soccer rankings, Jan. 19
The Arizona girls high school winter soccer season is in full swing. The Arizona Republic looks at the Top 10 teams, regardless of conference, at this point of the season. We call it our Super 10 rankings, which combines the 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A conferences. Here are the rankings as of Jan. 19, 2024:
1. Phoenix Xavier Preparatory Gators (6-0-1)
The three-time defending 6A state champions look unbeatable at the moment. Won its two games by a score of 11-0 last week, including a convincing 3-0 win over No. 7 Chandler Basha.
2. Gilbert Perry Pumas (8-1-2)
Has yet to lose a game to an in-state opponent this season. A big week is upcoming with games against No. 7 Basha and No. 1 Xavier Prep, the latter being a rematch of last year’s 6A state championship game.
3. Queen Creek Casteel Colts (11-1-1)
Followed up the 1-0 loss to Perry on Jan. 9 with two excellent wins this week, taking down Basha 2-0 and Gilbert Williams Field 4-0. One of the top teams to beat in 5A.
4. Phoenix Pinnacle Pioneers (10-3-2)
On a roll as of late, outsourcing opponents 16-0 in its last three games. Takes on No. 1 Xavier Prep tonight in its biggest test of the season so far.
5. Scottsdale Chaparral Firebirds (7-2-1)
Put together an excellent week, beating No. 9 Chandler Hamilton 2-1, Casa Grande 13-0 and Scottsdale Desert Mountain 2-1 in a six-day span. Alongside Casteel, one of the top contenders for a 5A state title.
6. Phoenix Desert Vista Thunder (7-5-2)
Only played once this week, but made it count with a 3-1 win over Tempe Corona del Sol. Lining up to be a dark horse in the 6A playoffs after playing one of the state’s most difficult schedules.
7. Chandler Basha Bears (12-2-1)
Suffered its first hiccup this season with consecutive losses in the past week. But those were against two of the top teams in Arizona: No. 1 Xavier Prep and No. 3 Casteel. Gets a chance to rebound this week with games against No. 2 Perry and No. 9 Hamilton.
8. Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory Saints (9-4-1)
Picked up a huge 1-0 win last week against fellow 5A competitor Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, which is ranked No. 10 on this list. The game of the year for the Saints is on deck next with No. 5 Chaparral making a visit to Bemis Field next week, a potential preview of a playoff matchup.
9. Chandler Hamilton Huskies (10-5-1)
Lost to No. 5 Chaparral last week, rebounded with a 1-0 win over Chandler this week. Will get to test itself in the final three regular-season games against No. 7 Basha, No. 2 Perry and No. 1 Xavier Prep.
10. Cave Creek Cactus Shadows Falcons (13-1-2)
Drew Gilbert Higley 1-1 before falling 1-0 to No. 8 Notre Dame Prep in its first game against a top-ranked team this season last week. Will try to get back on track with games against Scottsdale Horizon and Desert Mountain coming up.
Others to watch: Goodyear Millennium, Desert Mountain, Tucson Magnet, Chandler Arizona College Preparatory, Salpointe Catholic, Sahuarita Walden Grove, Prescott, Gilbert Christian.
