Arizona Cardinals lose Colt McCoy to concussion in third quarter vs. Denver Broncos

Colt McCoy #12 of the Arizona Cardinals leaves the field during the third quarter in the game against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field At Mile High on Dec. 18, 2022, in Denver, Colorado.

The Cardinals turned to third-string quarterback Trace McSorley in the third quarter of Sunday's game at Denver, after Colt McCoy, who had replaced injured starter Kyler Murray early in last week's game against New England, was lost to a concussion.

McCoy was injured on a running play in which he kept the ball, was hit and dropped to the field in obvious discomfort.

A cart came out on the field in a scene eerily reminiscent of the Murray injury, when the entire Cardinals team came out on the field in support of their quarterback.

Shortly thereafter, McCoy, who walked off the field on his own, was ruled out with a concussion. McSorley replaced him.

"He'll be in the concussion protocol, I know that," Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said right after the Cardinals 24-15 loss to Broncos. "I think he's doing OK. You never like to see that. It's a tough impact going out there seeing them like that. But talking to our trainers, I think he's he's doing better. So that's good."

McCoy finished 13 of 21 for 78 yards and a thrown interception. McSorley led a touchdown drive but threw two interceptions in less than two quarters of action.

"He's one of the toughest guys I've been around. Just see him go down like that, it was tough," McSorley said. "Everyone's praying for him and hoping he has a speedy recovery."

The Cardinals plan to install plays McSorley likes and is comfortable with, should he be called upon to start next Sunday, Christmas Night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"He'd like to have a couple those throws back but you know, anytime you come in without many reps throughout the season, that's not an easy task," Kingsbury said "But he's the guy who will get better the more reps he has and so, we've seen him operate at a high level at times."

McSorley hopes to be able to help the Cardinals going forward.

"The resiliency of this team has been really good. Everyone comes to work during the week, works their tail off to be able to get ready to play in the game," McSorley said. "Just our resiliency is something that we should be proud of. But yeah, we've just got to execute better to be able to win games and turn this tough season and not let this stuff start snowballing."
