Area teams continue play in region tourneys at Ortonville, Lake Norden, Northville & Volga

ORTONVILLE, Minn. — Castlewood and Big Stone each advanced to what is essentially the semifinal game of the Region 1B American Legion Baseball tournament with wins on Wednesday.

Castlewood (10-8) topped Milbank 13-8 and Big Stone (9-10) turned back Claremont 9-3.

Kegan Tvedt, Hunter Smith, Jyler Tharaldsen and Xander Sheehan each collected two hits for Castlewood, which erased a 5-4 deficit with a four-run fifth inning. Booker Schooley hit a double and struck out eight batters in five innings.

Tanner Hallquist tallied three hits and drove in four runs for Milbank. Merik Jenker, Justus Osborn and Joe Schulte had two hits each.

Connor Danielson had three hits and joined Isaac Brown and Carter Lee with doubles for Big Stone. Hunter Merritt fanned 16 batters in 6 2/3 innings.

Chris Cutler had two hits, Kassen Keough tripled and Ben Gustafson doubled for Claremont.

Milbank (13-11) opened the day with a 5-4 win over Sisseton that featured two-hit efforts from Dillen Scheeley and Maswon Miester and a strong pitching performance by Josh Pederson. Carter Stickland had three hits and Julius Cloud two for Sisseton.

Big Stone beat Webster 11-2 with two doubles and six strong innings of pitching from Dru Boots. Brown, Merritt and Danielson had two hits each. Jack Shoemaker doubled for Webster.

The tourney continues through Friday.

Region 6B

NORTHVILLE — Redfield advanced to the championship with a 24-0 five-inning victory over the Clark-Willow Lake Senators on Wednesday.

Nolan Gall tallied three hits and Owen Osborn, Erik Salmen and Eli Morrissette two each for Redfield (19-8), which got a two-hitter from Keaton Rohlfs. Salmen, who homered and doubled, and Gall each drove in five runs.

Jack Helkenn and Lucas Kanneigeter each singled for the Senators (8-9).

In loser's bracket games, the Faulkton-Highmore Hitmen edged Groton 12-11 on Alex Sorensen's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth. The Hitmen (13-11) later were eliminated with a 12-5 loss to Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern (7-5).

Sorensen also had a double and plated four runs for the Hitmen against Groton. Layne Cotton added a triple and a single and earned the win with four hitless innings of relief. Tate Larson and Brevin Fliehs each had two hits for Groton (13-9).

W-I-N pounded out 17 hits (three each by Xavier Kadlec, Kade Stahl and Quinton Fischbach and two each by Ashton Remily, Devon Fischbach and Noah Fischbach) in the win over the Hitmen, who got two hits and three RBIs from Cotton.

Region 5B

LAKE NORDEN — Salem-Montrose-Canova secured a berth in the championship with a 7-0 win over Lake Norden-Badger on Wednesday.

Jack Neises tossed a four-hit shutout and also drove in two runs with two hits for SMC (16-4). Braeden Kerkhove and Griffin Club also had two hits apiece.

Jackson Wadsworth collected two hits for Lake Norden-Badger. Dawson Noem took the loss despite allowing only one earned run.

In elimination games, Colton blanked Hamlin 16U 9-0 behind a three-hitter with seven strikeouts from Kaden Egger and Elkton scored on a groundout, balk and passed ball in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Humboldt-Hartford 7-6.

Noah Hayes collected two hits for Colton. Gavin Maag (two hits) and Ted Smith (doubled) led Hamlin.

Region 2B

VOLGA — Host Volga advanced out the loser's bracket with a 7-6 win over Baltic to earn a spot in the tourney championship against Dell Rapids.

Connor Gross had three hits, including a homer, to lead Volga. Boden Schiller chipped in with three hits and Dawson Doyscher and Jack Opitz two each. Gross was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to snap a 6-6 tie.

Baltic opened the day with a 16-3 win over Madison. Tayde Hansen, Riley Schultz and Beau Keith each had two hits for Baltic. Keith homered for Baltic and Lucas Johnson did the same for Madison.
