Area swimmers have top finishes at the CIF-SS Division 1 and 2 swimming finals

Newbury Park High freshman Megan Wang and Ventura sophomore Sarah Beckman led the way for area swimmers at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 and Division 2 swimming championships Friday at the Riverside Community College Aquatic Complex.

In her first CIF-SS meet, Wang finished second in the Division 2 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.92 seconds, breaking her own school record and automatically qualifying for the state meet. Wang also finished 15th in 200 IM in 2:11.10.

Wang, senior Charlotte Sams, sophomore Caroline Nyborg and senior Cassandra Wallop placed seventh in the 200 IM relay with a state-consideration time of 1:50.19. Sams also finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.13 as the Panthers placed 18th out of 50 teams in the Division 2 girls standings.

Beckman, who had two top-six finishes in Division 2 in her freshman season, finished fourth in the Division 1 100 butterfly in 55.08 and eighth in 200 freestyle in a state-consideration time of 1:51.31. Both were also All-American consideration times. The Star's 2022 Girls Swimmer of the Year was the only local swimmer to place in the top-level Division 1 finals.

For the Oaks Christian girls team in Division 2, freshman Mia Fabros placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.24 and was 17th in the 50 freestyle in 25.06. Sophomore Abbey Kantz placed 16th in the 100 freestyle in 54.78. Senior Laura Kelly, Fabros, sophomore Kaila Ord and Kantz finished 10th in the 200 IM relay with a state-consideration time of 1:50.67. Fabros, Kelly, freshman Maryam Maamoun and Kantz took 11th in the 200 freestyle relay with a state-consideration time of 1:40.46. The Lions were 24th in the team standings.

Camarillo senior Anna Beahan finished 11th in the Division 2 100 freestyle in 53.86 and placed 14th in the 50 freestyle with a state-consideration time of 24.93.

The Westlake boys team finished 21st in the Division 2 standings. Sophomore Mark Mashkovich took 11th in the 100 freestyle with a state-consideration time of 47.54. Junior Bryan Huang placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke in 59.99 and junior John de Vere was 18th in 1:01.57. Mashkovich, Huang, senior Donovan James and senior Austin Majus finished sixth in the 200 IM relay in 1:38.38.

Buena senior Nicholas Furneaux finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke — the highest placement by a local boys swimmer in Division 2 — with a state-consideration time of 58.19 and was 17th in the 100 freestyle in 48.28.

Royal sophomore Aneesh Veeravatnam finished eighth in the Division 2 100 backstroke with a state-consideration time of 52.10 and placed 11th in the 100 butterfly in 51.20.

Newbury Park senior Cameron Habib finished 11th in the Division 2 100 freestyle with a state-consideration time of 47.84. Habib, senior Grayson Ing, senior Jonah Germann and junior Finn Claassen took sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a state-consideration time of 1:28.13.

Camarillo junior Paul Patterson was 14th in the Division 2 100 backstroke in 53.92 and placed 17th in the 200 IM in 1:57.65.

Oaks Christian sophomore Camden Kocur finished 16th in the Division 2 100 breaststroke in 1:00.98 and junior Joshua McBride was 18th in the 200 IM in 2:00.06. Kocur, McBride, senior Tyler Moore and freshman Darian Wang placed 17th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.21.
