Area roundup: Osky, Pella wrestlers both take third place finishes at tourneys

Oskaloosa, Pella compete at North Mahaska Invite

NEW SHARON — Oskaloosa and Pella both sent wrestlers to compete at the North Mahaska Invitational on Saturday. The Indians would bring 15 boys and finished tied for third with North Mahaska with 140 points while Pella brought a team of mostly JV wrestlers and took ninth with 47 points. Solon won the tournament with 230 points.

Oskaloosa came away with two champions and two other top three finishers. Ty Lorentzen (113) was perfect 3-0 on the day with three first period pins while Kaiden Parker (132) also went 3-0 with a pin in the quarterfinals before a pair of close decision wins against tough competition winning 2-1 against Grinnell's Logan McDonald (23-2) in the semifinals and 5-4 in the final to hand previously undefeated (30-0) Ryan Groom of North Mahaska.

Parker Jordan was 2-1 on the day with one pin on his way to a runner-up finish at 190 while Brock Beerbower (165) powered to a 3-2 record on the day to take home third place.

Pella's best finish on the day came courtesy of Jackson Menke, who took fourth at 285.

Oskaloosa wrestles at Albia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. while Pella heads to Indianola on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Dutch take third at Gary Christensen Invite

WINTERSET — Pella was among the 17 teams in action at the Winterset Gary Christensen Invite on Saturday. The Dutch showed well coming away with third place with 176.5 points finishing behind Waukee (204.5) and Osage (212.5) in the team race.

Pella had five top three finishes on the day including two champions. Damion Clark (132) went 4-0 with three pins and a major on his way to winning his bracket while Jackson Van Kley (190) also enjoyed a perfect 4-0 record with three pins and one tech fall.

T.R. Putz (150) was 3-1 with two pins before falling in the finals to take second place while Kieran Van Voorst (215) was 2-1 with one pin on his way to a runner-up finish. Logan Bruxvoort (165) added a 3-1 record on the day with two pins to take home third place.

Pella will head to Indianola on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Girls Wrestling

Osky girls open 2024 at Ottumwa, North Mahaska

OTTUMWA/NEW SHARON — The Oskaloosa girls wrestlers were in action on back-to-back nights as they competed at Ottumwa on Friday and North Mahaska on Saturday.

They had four girls wrestle on Friday among the 10 teams competing at the Ottumwa Girls Invitational. Osky came away with ninth place on a tough day with the lone win coming courtesy of an Aleigha Sheets pin.

The Indian girls bounced back with a solid showing on Saturday in New Sharon. Sheets earned back-to-back pins in her first two matches to reach the finals before falling there to take second at 135. Jaylynn Kerr then picked up her first win of the season with a 10-1 major decision in her first match. She later took third place at 115 while McKeny Nance grabbed fourth at 235.

Oskaloosa is set to wrestle at Albia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Bowling

Oskaloosa splits with Sigourney

SIGOURNEY — The Oskaloosa bowling teams started 2024 in Sigourney where they would pick up a split with the girls falling 2223-2120 and the boys winning 2741-2637.

Oskaloosa will host Bondurant-Farrar on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Dutch swept by Gilbert

NEWTON — The Dutch honored their seniors on Saturday as they got set to take on Gilbert. Both Pella teams would fall with the girls losing 2152-2032 while the boys lost 3160-2682.

The Lady Dutch were led by Taylor Walker's 338 series with a pair of 169 games while McKenna Salvador added a 317 series with a 174 high game.

On the boys side, Carter Failor led the way with a 390 series while Zander Beckey wasn't too far behind with a 357 series.

Pella are back in action at Newton on Saturday.

Pella Christian teams fall at Newton

NEWTON — The Pella Christian bowlers were in action at Newton on Saturday with both teams coming up short against the Cardinals.

The PC girls fell 2395-1354. Caitlin Veenstra led with a 230 series while Sophie Gun added a 213 series.

The Eagle boys suffered a 3030-2136 loss. Andrew Van Kooten bowled a 305 series with Alex Van Gorp following with a 292 series.

Pella Christian will try to grab their first wins of the season at Norwalk on Saturday.
