AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Newcastle, Knox City pick up mercy-rule victories

Newcastle and Knox City each needed just two quarters to pick up mercy-rule victories by the exact same score Friday.

Knox City (6-0) remained undefeated with a 48-0 victory against Saint Jo, while Newcastle moved to 5-1 by beating Aspermont by the same score. Each game ended at halftime.

Newcastle got a lift from the return of Isaac King after a one-game absence. King rushed for 214 yards and two TDs on 10 carries. He also caught a 13-yard TD from Julian Jimenez.

Ty Strawbridge scored a 48-yard run and had a fumble return TD along with 11 tackles on defense. London Martinez added 49 rushing yards and two TDs on three carries.

Second-ranked Knox City was led by the efforts of quarterback Bryson Callaway, who passed for 130 yards and two TDs while rushing for a team-high 85 yards and another score. Cameron Hernandez and Tristin Baxter combined for 126 rushing yards and a score each. Both of Callaway’s TD passes went to Devin Guillory, who added an interception on defense.
