AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Mother Nature wipes out several local games

Mother Nature was the victor across the Wichita Falls area Friday night, washing out several games due to lengthy thunderstorms hovering over various stadiums and fields.

Among the games canceled or shortened were Electra at Nocona, Henrietta at Bowie, Millsap at Archer City, Penelope at Forestburg, Haskell at Olney and Peaster at Jacksboro.

Of those matchups, only Peaster at Jacksboro completed enough action where a winner could be definitively declared. The Tigers led Peaster, 42-19, when it was called midway through the third quarter.

Several other games, including Windthorst-Muenster, Burkburnett-Iowa Park and Springtown-Hirschi, persevered through long weather delays and eventually finished the game.

No passing needed: Vernon runs over Lake View

VERNON — Vernon attempted a single pass in its 42-6 victory against San Angelo Lake View, pushing to 3-0 on the season.

The Lions played without starting quarterback Kale Sherrill, who entered concussion protocol this week, but is expected to play next Friday.

Sophomore Ty Scott took over under center and attempted one pass, which fell incomplete. It didn’t matter. The Lions dominated on the ground from their slot-T offense, rushing for 444 yards.

Tru Gipson led the way with 171 yards and two TDs on 13 carries. Jevon Fanner had 99 yards on 10 carries, while Adarius Williams rushed for 97 yards and two TDs on nine carries. Scott had 32 rushing and two TDs.

City View’s Aldrich notches first win

Enrollment size wasn’t an advantage for Fort Worth Trimble Tech on Friday night as the Bulldogs ran into a buzzsaw at Veteran’s Memorial Field.

City View routed Trimble Tech, 45-0, and head coach Heath Aldrich earned his first career victory in the process. Trimble Tech (0-2) is a Class 5A Division II program playing its first game of the season. Its other loss was by forfeit.

The Mustangs (1-2) held a 438-173 advantage in total yards and rushed for 281. Senior Jeremiah Durham recorded 132 rushing yards with a TD on 13 carries. Kiauntre Gresham added 63 rushing and two TDs on six carries.

Another statement: Knox City mercy-rules May

MAY — Knox City continued to establish itself as a genuine Class A Division I state title contender with a 64-14 victory over No. 6 May on Friday, needing two quarters to execute the 45-point mercy rule.

It’s the Greyhounds’ second win against a state-ranked opponent after beating Westbrook 34-24 in the season opener. Westbrook has since won back-to-back games, including a 52-0 victory against No. 5 Rankin on Friday.

Knox City finished with 237 total yards, including 170 rushing. Cameron Hernandez led the way with 87 rushing and two TDs. The Greyhounds' first two scores came on interception returns by Devin Guillory and Caleb Arrieta. Both players later added offensive scores.

Knox City gets another test next week, playing Rankin at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Hermleigh.
