AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Iowa Park falls in OT, narrowly misses out on district title

TUSCOLA – Iowa Park was moments from clinching the District 3-3A Division I title Friday.

But Jim Ned escaped with a 14-7 overtime victory, giving the Indians a share of the district title and relegating Iowa Park to the No. 4 playoff seed. Iowa Park (4-6, 3-2) faces perennial state contender Brock to open the playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday in Graham.

The Hawks took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 29-yard pass from Parker Allen to Carter Sales. It turned out to be the only points the Hawks scored, although they weren’t without chances.

The Hawks were stuffed once inside the Jim Ned 5-yard line and missed a field goal that could have proved enough to win in regulation.

Jim Ned missed a field goal on the final play before halftime and had other scoring opportunities snuffed out by the Iowa Park defense. Rody Williams had an interception for Iowa Park.

But with the game on the line, Jim Ned quarterback Dean Guffey played the hero.

Guffey was surrounded on a fourth-and-5 in the fourth quarter but avoided the sack and scrambled for a 29-yard touchdown. The extra point was good, tying the game with 2:03 remaining.

Iowa Park had the first overtime possession but turned it over on downs. Jim Ned moved the ball in its overtime possession, and Guffey appropriately ended the game with a 2-yard plunge into the end zone.
