AP Top 25 has a new No. 1, Penn State enters the top 25

The defending national champions are once again sitting on top of the college football world, at least according to the latest AP Top 25. Georgia took over the top spot in the updated AP Top 25 on Sunday after another blowout victory in Week 2, but it was the struggle on the road witnessed by Alabama that caused the biggest change in the top of the ranking this weekend. Meanwhile, Penn State has also worked its way into the AP Top 25 for the first time this season.

Penn State entered the AP Top 25 at No. 22 this week, coming in ahead of No. 23 Pittsburgh, No. 24 Texas A&M, and No. 25 Oregon. Both Pitt and Texas A&M lost home games this weekend while Penn State improved to 2-0 on the year.

Penn State also benefited from a massive fall out of the top 25 by Notre Dame, which was hammered hard by the AP voters after slumping out to an 0-2 start to the season following their loss to Marshall. Wisconsin also tumbled out of the AP top 25 following their home loss to Washington State.

The Big Ten is represented in this week’s AP Top 25 by No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan, No. 11 Michigan State, and Penn State at No. 22.

Interestingly, the AP voters also moved the Texas Longhorns into the top 25 after not being ranked last week. Texas entered the poll at No. 21, one spot ahead of Penn State, despite losing at home to Alabama. The AP voters also have No. 14 Utah ranked four spots ahead of No. 18 Florida despite the Gators winning a head-to-head matchup just two weeks ago and both teams having identical records. Florida lost to No. 9 Kentucky, with the Wildcats moving up 11 spots in the AP Top 25 this week.
