AP Top 25: Alabama moves past Georgia to No. 1 after SEC title win

Alabama is back where it started.

The Crimson Tide opened the 2021 season as the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25 and now they will enter the postseason in that same position after upsetting Georgia in the SEC title game on Saturday.

The Tide jumped up from No. 4 following the victory while Georgia dropped two spots to No. 3. In between is Michigan, the Big Ten champion, at No. 2. Undefeated Cincinnati, the AAC champion, is next at No. 4.

We’ll see if the final rankings from the College Football Playoff selection committee will follow suit. Those will be unveiled later Sunday.

Notre Dame did not play on Saturday but moved up a spot to No. 5 in the AP poll. The Irish are ahead of Big 12 champion Baylor at No. 6, Ohio State at No. 7, Ole Miss at No. 8, Oklahoma State at No. 9 and Pac-12 champion Utah at No. 10.

Oklahoma State was No. 5 last week but fell to Baylor in the Big 12 title game. It was a loss that knocked OSU from playoff contention.

Elsewhere, Pittsburgh moved up four spots to No. 13 after an impressive win over Wake Forest in the ACC title game. Another conference champion, Sun Belt winner Louisiana, moved up from No. 20 to No. 16.
