Anthony Richardson’s concussion lingers ahead of South Carolina game
Florida football got some bad news ahead of its road matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night when Orlando Sentinel sportswriter Edgar Thompson reported that quarterback Anthony Richardson will serve as an emergency backup quarterback behind Emory Jones.
Richardson suffered a concussion against the Georgia Bulldogs last week in the third quarter after being tackled by linebacker Adam Anderson, knocking him out of the game. The redshirt freshman had not practiced as of the middle of the week and his status coming into the weekend has been surrounded by uncertainty.

Richardson’s first career start against UGA did not go quite as most had hoped, putting up a 12-for-20 passing performance for just 82 yards and a pair of picks; he also gained a measly 25 yards on 12 carries on the ground. It took Jones grabbing the reins from him after his injury to finally put the Gators on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
Over the 2021 campaign, Richardson has completed 33-for-57 (57.9%) passing totaling 474 yards while tossing five touchdowns to five interceptions. He has contributed 374 rushing yards on 40 carries, crossing the goal line thrice this season. His 9.35 yards-per-carry average currently leads the country heading into Week 10.
