Anthony Perry helps lead West Branch High School baseball to OHSAA district championship

LOUISVILLE — Another strong pitching performance helped the West Branch High School baseball team continue its memorable season.

West Branch rolled to a 9-1 win over Geneva in a Division II district championship game at Louisville’s Field of Dreams.

West Branch (23-6) advances to the regional tournament at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton. They will play Youngstown Ursuline in a regional semifinal at 2 p.m., May 30. The other half of the bracket features CVCA and Kenston.

West Branch heads to regionals after allowing just one run, which was unearned, in its two district wins.

Anthony Perry threw a complete game Wednesday, giving up just an unearned run in the first inning. Perry struck out six and gave up just six hits.

His effort came two days after teammate Beau Alazaus threw a shutout in a 1-0 win over ND-CL in the district semifinals.

Perry did more than provide West Branch with a pitching gem. He also drove in three runs, jump-starting his team’s offense in the first inning.

After an error helped Geneva score a run in the top of the first, West Branch answered with three runs in its half of the inning. Perry’s single to left field drove in the first two runs.

Two more runs in the second put West Branch in control and it pulled away with three more in the fifth. Perry singled as part of the fifth-inning rally, which also featured a Jeremiah Thomas RBI triple.

Thomas finished with two RBIs. Perry was one of three Warriors with two hits, joining Boston Mulinix and Hunter Shields. Shields had four hits in the district tournament.

West Branch will arrive at regionals with a single-season school record for wins.

Its regional semifinal will be a rematch of a game West Branch won 3-0 to open its regular season back on March 28. That win was part of a 9-0 start by West Branch this season, setting the tone for its run to a district title.
