Angel Olivares, Roosevelt run game control clock in win over Brownfield football

BROWNFIELD — The Brownfield football team had no room for error the way Roosevelt was running the ball Friday.

As is the Eagles' preferred method, the team squeezed every second it could off the clock with its flexbone offense. When the Cubs blinked first, it spelled a Roosevelt victory.

The Eagles (2-1) scored three times in the final 6:16 of the first half to set up their 46-30 win at Cub Stadium. Brownfield, which trailed 40-14 late in the third quarter, climbed within 10 points before Roosevelt fullback Angel Olivares slammed the door with his third touchdown.

Highlights

There were three lead changes in the opening half before Roosevelt pulled away. After going up 22-14, the Eagles struck again two plays after recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

A safety on Brownfield's first play of the second half preceded Bram Raven's 13-yard TD, which gave Roosevelt 32 unanswered points.

The Cubs (2-1) sandwiched TDs around a Roosevelt turnover, but Olivares rumbled 26 yards for his final score to keep Brownfield at arm's length.

Friday's stars

Olivares, a 5-foot-8, 210-pound coach-described "bowling ball," led the potent ground attack with 94 yards. Quarterback Nate Casarez, the conductor of the flexbone, followed with 82 yards and a score. Roosevelt coach Carter Robinson was also bullish on Logan Bartlett, who netted 68 yards and a TD.

Eight players carried the ball for the Eagles, who finished with 33 minutes, 34 seconds of possession. That included TD drives of 5:53, 6:56 and 7:16.

Brownfield's J.J. Martinez threw for 308 yards, with Austin Martinez (5-97) and JoJo Carrillo (6-93) leading the way.

Notes and quotes

The Eagles surrendered 20 points combined the first two weeks and now average 16.7 allowed after a solid outing that included three sacks and two takeaways.

Robinson: "We didn't play well on defense last year, to be completely honest with you. So that's something we've been focusing on all offseason. … It's good to see our kids showing that on Friday nights now."

Robinson on Olivares: "I wouldn't want to tackle him, I'll tell you that much. He's good, man. He comes off the ball fast, gets those feet chopping, and I wouldn't want to be in the way."

STAT LEADERS: Lubbock, South Plains high school football through Week 2

Brownfield coach Taheric Brantley: "We made too many mistakes. We didn't execute that first half. … (Roosevelt) came off the ball, they hit us in the mouth, and we didn't respond until the second half. Our mantra going into next week is to be able to start fast and finish fast as well."

Brantley on defending the flexbone: "It's tough, especially when you're facing spread teams week to week. To only have three days, really, of practice to get ready for a team that just wants to pound it down and has a lot of misdirection in the backfield, it's tough on the kids. … I've got to give Roosevelt all the credit in the world. They came in here and they played their tails off."
