Andy Murray handed wildcard to play French Open men's doubles with Dan Evans
Andy Murray has been awarded a wildcard to play in the French Open men’s doubles with Dan Evans as preparation for this summer’s Olympics.
Murray and Evans were the only non-French pairing to receive a wildcard to Roland Garros and the first non-natives to receive such an invitation into the men’s doubles main draw for more than two decades.
The 37-year-old Murray has said he has few plans to play on much past this summer with the Paris Games – shortly after Wimbledon – expected to be the finale to an illustrious career.
Hopes of playing a final French Open had hung in the balance when he damaged ligaments in his ankle at the Miami Open back in March but he returned to action in Bordeaux last week and has also played in Geneva since.
He has made it clear he would only compete at the Olympics if he could be in medal contention. That looks unlikely to come in the singles but there is hopes he could pose a formidable threat in the doubles format with either Evans or else doubles specialist Joe Salisbury.
Murray won silver in the mixed doubles at London 2012 with Laura Robson and was a quarter-finalist alongside Joe Salisbury in the men’s at the last Games in 2021. He is also a two-time Olympic gold medallist having won the title at Wimbledon in 2012 and again in Rio de Janeiro four years later.
Murray and Evans were last teamed up together at the Citi Open last summer where they won a match but then went on to lose in the quartrter-finals.
