Anderson will now speak at Steak & Burger Dinner

Sep. 22—The featured speaker for the 40th annual Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club Steak & Burger Dinner will change from one former Kentucky Wildcat to another.

Derek Anderson will now be the featured speaker at the Steak & Burger on Monday, Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mike Horn Unit at 3415 Buckland Square.

Anderson played on the 1996 Kentucky NCAA national championship team for former coach Rick Pitino, and was a key player on the 1997 Kentucky team that also reached the NCAA championship game. Anderson's senior season was cut short by a knee injury, when he was playing well enough to be considered for national Player of the Year in college basketball.

Tyler Ulis, another former Kentucky standout, was the original Steak & Burger speaker, but the club had to make the change because of circumstances beyond its control.

"We are sincerely grateful for Mr. Anderson and his support and willingness to help us continue this tradition for our club members," said Kalie Winkler, director of RD and marketing at the club.

Nine players from the 1996 UK national champions, including Anderson, went on to play in the NBA. In 2006, Anderson was on the Miami Heat team that defeated the Dallas Mavericks to win an NBA Championship. His NBA career spanned 11 years.

In his professional career off the court, Anderson started a foundation, wrote a book, and is a motivational speaker. He enjoys giving back to the community and working with youth.

An announcement for the dinner said: "This year's dinner and all future Steak & Burger Dinners will be dedicated in honor of Jack T. Wells. He was a beloved supporter of our organization and believed in helping us change the lives of the youth in Owensboro."

The event is sponsored by Independence Bank. Longhorn Steakhouse will provide the meals. Funds raised will be used to provide Academic Success and Healthy Lifestyle programs for activities for the Owensboro location. Ticket prices are $100 per individual, $400 for one table with four guests, and $750 for two tables with eight guests.
