Amber Smith named assistant coach on IU women's basketball staff

Amber Smith has been named an assistant coach on Teri Moren’s IU women’s basketball staff.

Recently, Smith spent seven seasons on the Kentucky women’s basketball staff. She spent two seasons as director of player development before serving as an assistant coach for the last five seasons.

“I am thrilled that Amber is joining us in Bloomington” Moren said in a release. “Amber is passionate, high energy, excellent at building relationships and is the ultimate competitor that will fit in perfectly to our culture. We are excited that she has decided to become a part of our Hoosier family.”

As a player, Smith appeared in 123 games at Kentucky and was part of two Wildcat teams that made the Elite Eight. She then transitioned to a coaching career, where she spent stints at Tennessee and Louisiana Tech before returning to Kentucky.

An opening on Moren’s staff became available following the departure of Glenn Box. At IU, Box spent three seasons as an assistant coach and four as associate head coach. This offseason, though, he took the head women’s basketball coaching job at Miami (OH).

There are high expectations for IU women’s basketball entering the 2023-24 season. The Hoosiers are returning star Mackenzie Holmes, along with key contributors Chloe Moore-McNeil, Sydney Parrish and Sara Scalia. IU is coming off an impressive run last season, in which it won the Big Ten regular-season championship and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. However, it came to an uninspiring close with a loss to Miami (Fla.) in the Round of 32.
