Allen transformed boys' basketball in Mt. Juliet

Mar. 9—When Troy Allen came to Mt. Juliet High to coach boys' basketball in 2005, the girls had just won the state championship while the program he was taking over finished below .500 the previous season and had gone through three coaches in four years.

The boys' basketball landscape in west Wilson County had totally changed by the time Allen told his Green Hill team Wednesday morning he was retiring.

"I was told a long time ago you'd know when it was time," Allen, 54, said that afternoon. "I felt like the last year and a half it was getting to be that time. I could draw my retirement. It seemed like the right time. My youngest daughter is graduating from high school. A lot of the things it takes to be a good coach and run a good program I wasn't enjoying as much as I used to and it just seemed like the time to move on."
