Allen teams sweep Stratford at home

Dec. 15—ALLEN — The Allen Mustangs used a solid first-half defensive effort to tackle local foe Stratford 56-42 in a Tuesday night home game.

Coach Greg Mills' squad, ranked No. 10 in Class A, improved to 6-1 on the season, while Stratford dropped to 2-4.

In the girls' contest, the Lady Mustangs held off a late Stratford rally in a 47-40 victory.

The Allen girls ranked No. 10 in Class A and fresh off winning the championship at the rugged Pontotoc Conference Tournament, stayed unbeaten at 7-0. The Lady Bulldogs dipped to 2-4.

Both Allen teams host local rival Roff tonight, while Stratford heads to Davis.

BOYS

Allen 56, Stratford 42

Allen led just 10-8 after a hard-fought first quarter but used a 15-8 run in the second period — during which seven different players scored — to push its lead to 25-16 by halftime.

Both teams scored 17 points each in a fast-paced third quarter before Allen finished the contest on a 14-9 run.

Freshman post player Gus Matthews was a force inside for Allen scoring a team-best 18 points — 16 coming in the second half. Brayden Tatum followed with 13 points for the hosts and Bodee Garrett contributed eight points. Keithon Howard hit 4-of-4 free throws and added six points for the Mustangs.

Walker Chandler led the Bulldogs with 18 points and six rebounds. Carson Owens scored 12 points and had five assists and Lincoln Hall reached double figures with 11 points. Hall also had four rebounds and four steals.

GIRLS

Allen 47, Stratford 40

Allen held a slim 15-12 lead after the first period but used a pivotal 18-5 volley in the second quarter to grab a 33-17 halftime lead. Stratford outscored the Lady Mustangs 23-14 in the second half, including going on a 13-6 run to end the game, but couldn't complete the comeback bid.

Cherish Woodward led the Allen offense with 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also had eight rebounds and three steals.

Addison Prentice also reached double figures for Allen with 15 points, including a 4-of-5 effort from the 3-point stripe. She also hit 3-of-4 free shots.

Stoney Cully added eight points for the home team, including a pair of triples.

Erin Henderson and Jaelee Korzan paced Stratford with 10 points each. They both drained a pair of 3-pointers and Korzan came up with six rebounds. Callie Sandlin and Trinity Bess both scored seven points for Stratford. Sandlins also had six boards. Grace Wright finished with six points and eight rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

Both teams shot 50% from the free-throw line. Allen made 5-of-10 free shots and Stratford went 4-of-8 from the line.
