Alabama Morning Drive: Nick Saban discusses third practice of the spring

Good morning and welcome back to our Thursday edition of Alabama Morning Drive where we deliver the latest news and notes surrounding the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Nick Saban and the Alabama football team hit the practice field in full pads for the first time this spring. In this edition of Alabama Morning Drive, we will look at what coach Saban had to say, and how the baseball and softball teams performed on Wednesday night.

Let’s get right to it!

The Alabama softball got a convincing win on Wednesday night over UAB, drafting the Blazers 8-1. It was a tight contest until the top of the sixth inning when Alabama poured in six of its eight runs. With the win, the Tide improved to 24-4 on the season.

Alabama is now 28-0 all-time against UAB, including a 12-0 record in Birmingham.

Up next for the Tide is a weekend series in Columbia, SC against the Gamecocks.

Midweek games have not been kind to the Alabama baseball team. If we are telling the truth, with the 5-4 loss on Wednesday night to UAB, the Tide now has four more losses than they probably should to inferior opponents.

Sure the team can make up for it during SEC play, but Alabama needs to start taking care of business in these midweek games if they have hopes of returning to regionals. With Wednesday night’s defeat, Alabama is now 13-9 on the season.

Brad Bohannon and his squad will return to the diamond on Friday to begin a three-game series with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville.

Finally…Nick Saban talks spring practice…

Alabama completed its third practice of the spring on Wednesday afternoon and afterward, head coach Nick Saban addressed the media to field questions on his 2022 squad.

Coach Saban was asked about Georgia Tech running back transfer Jahmyr Gibbs and the head coach said the following.

“He has really been a very good addition to our team. He’s got great speed. He’s really a good receiver, good third-down back. He’s got great vision. He’s got really good burst out of a cut. I’m really, really impressed with what he’s been able to do. He’s smart. He picked up things. He’s an experienced player. He really does a good job of understanding what we’re trying to do and how we’re doing it, and that’s what experienced players can do. He’s done a really, really good job.”

Coach Saban also offered some high praise for true freshman early enrollee Kendrick Law.

“He’s done a nice job. He’s a guy that could play multiple positions if that creates value, in your opinion. But he has done a really good job at receiver. He’s got some speed, he’s got some size, he runs good routes, he’s got really good hands. He’s picked up on things and sort of has the right mindset to be able to deal with some of the frustrations young players go through when they’re trying to learn a system and are making more mistakes than they’re used to probably. He plays through it, and he’s made a lot of plays, and I think he’s a guy who might be able to help us if he continues to develop.”

Alabama will have today off before returning to practice on back-to-back days on Friday and Saturday.

That is going to put an end to our Thursday edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone has a safe and happy day. Make sure to stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on the Alabama Crimson Tide!
