Airport, SMCC, Summerfield, Whiteford, Huron girls hoops win

CARLETON – Airport’s girls basketball team struggled last week.

The Jets came into the week tied for first place in the Huron League, but drop out of the lead with losses to Riverview and Flat Rock.

The Jets got back on course Monday with a 64-43 romp over Milan.

“We played as good a first half as we’ve played in two years,” Airport coach Darrell Mossburg said. “The last two games were ugly. We struggled and our kids owned it, the coaches owned it and we got back to work.

“Win or lose the journey starts over. So tomorrow, new journey, new day. Attack it.”

Airport attacked Milan Monday, building a massive 44-7 halftime lead with nine different players contributing points.

Payton Zajac (16), Sophia Mator (11), Olivia Gratz (10) and Chloe Ruhlig (10) all wound up in double figures for the 10-5 Jets. Ruhlig hit a career high and matched her point total for the entire season.

Malea Wourman scored a game-high 24 points for Milan (4-10).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SMCC defense excels

FLAT ROCK – St. Mary Catholic Central’s defense was a touch better in a 37-34 win over Flat Rock Monday night.

“Great defensive effort by both teams,” Flat Rock coach Brian Kryk said. “It was a very close game from start to finish and games like that come down to the little things. Although we emphasized second-chance points, we lost the offensive rebounding battle and gave them too many extra possessions. … I don't think we matched the level of aggressiveness CC brought.”

Brooke Mossburg netted 10 points to lead 13-3 SMCC. Layla Holbrook topped Flat Rock (9-7) with 8.

SMCC took the junior varsity game 40-17.

Clements lifts Huron

NEWPORT – Nina Clements scored a career-high 21 points to carry New Boston Huron over Jefferson 52-43 Monday night.

Her older sister Lila added 12 points as the Chiefs improved to 8-6.

Gracie Jones led Jefferson (4-14) with 15 points.

More Summerfield doubles

PETERSBURG – Jaeli Jones (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Mia Miller (15 points 11 rebounds) both had double-doubles for the second straight game as Summerfield moved to 10-6 with a 58-41 win over Allen Park Cabrini Monday.

Ava Fisher, Mayley Mannebach, Cami Taylor and Makenzie Wolfe also were credited with strong games by coach Mickey Moody.

“W we took our time and got some really good looks offensively and we did a really nice job rebounding tonight,” Moody said. “Another bright spot for us: we shot 71 percent from the free-throw line tonight.”

Elena Miller and Brea Olmstead scored 12 points each as Summerfield’s junior varsity moved to 12-2 with a 39-20 win.

Rasor on target

BRITTON – Emily Rasor hit nine of her 12 shots from the floor and scored a season-high 23 points to lead Whiteford to a 61-31 rout of Britton Deerfield Monday night.

Annie Gapp rang up a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Emily Hill chipped in 9 points and 6 steals for the 8-5 Bobcats.

Rasor scored 10 points in the first quarter as Whiteford raced out to an 18-2 lead.

“Our pressure was great in forcing turnovers enabling us to get some transition baskets,” Whiteford coach Nick Brillhart said. “We played with great energy from the opening tip.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Big night for Tejada-Walker

NEW BOSTON – Alex Tejeda-Walker had the game of his life for New Boston Huron in a 56-41 win over Taylor Monday night.

The junior scored a career-high 16 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Walker had plenty of scoring support as Kyle Kantola added 15 points and Zennon Grant 12 for the 11-5 Chiefs.

“This was a great team win and it was fun to watch the offense tonight,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said.

PREP BASKETBALL

Bedford in Top 10

EAST LANSING – Bedford’s girls basketball team has cracked the Top 10 of the Associated Press state basketball rankings for the first time this season.

The Mules are No. 10 in Division 1.

Summerfield is the Monroe County Region only ranked boys team. The Bulldogs check in at No. 9 in Division 4.

Flat Rock and Dundee show up in honorable mention for Division 2 boys and the St. Mary Catholic Central girls made honorable mention for Division 3.

PREP BOWLING

Monroe blanks Mules

MONROE – Evan Eagle shot 227 and Camron Cadle 202 to lead Monroe past Bedford 30-0 at Monroe Sport Center Monday.

Bedford took the girls match 21-9 despite a 177 by Monroe’s Gwen Braun.

Richardson sets standard

BELLEVILLE – Veronica Richardson rolled a league-high 267 as New Boston Huron’s girls remained unbeaten in the Huron League with a 29.5-.5 victory over St. Mary Catholic Central Monday.

In other girls matches, Abby Hills shot 201-186 and Brook Hester rolled her first 200 as Airport beat Dundee 26.5-3.5, Maggie Smith carded a 213 and  Rachel Peladeau won two match points to lead Milan past Jefferson 27-3 and Flat Rock got a 195 from Bella Thomas in a 22-8 victory over Riverview.

It remains crowded on top of the boys standings. Huron, Airport and Milan all have one loss.

Zachary McCormick shot 252 in Huron’s 27-3 triumph over SMCC, Colin Peterson (255) and Braden Siders (203) led Airport past Dundee 29-1 and a big day by Logan McClaren (230-222) sparked Milan’s 26-4 win over Jefferson 26-4.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Johnson leads Bedford

TEMPERANCE – Wendy Johnson’s best game of the season lifted Bedford’s eighth-grade girls to a 27-8 win over Jackson Monday.

The seventh graders won 33-10 behind strong play by Delaney Brown and Jenna Hakki.

The eighth-grade girls team lost two heartbreakers Saturday – 24-23 on a buzzer-beater by Tecumseh and 16-14 to Monroe.

ADULT SOCCER

Bucknor scores two

Steve Bucknor scored two goals to lead Athletico to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Lamour Printing at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

Athletico which trailed 3-0 at the half.
