AGR early season watchlist for Section V girls soccer: 144 of the top players

Shannon Koomen was one Webster Schroeder soccer player who received the coveted hard hat after an undefeated start to the 2023 season.

Koomen is a senior defender whose job was to mark one of Penfield's best players. The Warriors won 2-1 partly due to her effort on coach Kent Brown's backline, which returns a core that led to 13 shutouts and a 2022 Section V Class AA title. The hard hat is based off of Jon Gordon's book, "The Hard Hat: 21 Ways to be a Great Teammate."

"The hard had recognizes kids who play with the behaviors the book represents," Brown said.

Webster Schroeder's top players

Webster Schroeder will navigate this fall without perhaps the team's best scorer, senior Abby Herbst, who tore her ACL playing lacrosse in the spring.

"We're on a learning curve trying to make up the loss of Abby's goal-scoring, and her size, and corner kick opportunities," Brown said.

The Warriors have young players at forward, but senior Alyssa Doody is a "pace setter" in the midfield who changed the game when she moved inside against Penfield on Aug. 31. Sasha Zilist, another senior, is a "well composed" center midfielder who keeps the ball soft on her feet, has tremendous field vision and is a great leader. Leah Marcell is another midfielder who is a scoring threat.

Senior Ellie Ockrin replaces All-Greater Rochester goalkeeper Meg Fry. Ockrin played in front of Ockrin on defense last year, but she's playing goalie again for the first time since her freshman campaign. Ockrin even quarterbacked Schroeder's flag football team. She'll count on defenders Koomen and Maddie Peterson to keep the ball away.

"Ellie's just a good athlete who can react to what's going on around her," Brown said.
