Adrian College men's hockey punches ticket to third-straight NCAA Division III Frozen Four

ADRIAN — The Adrian College men's hockey team exacted some revenge Saturday as it beat NCHA rival St. Norbert in the NCAA Division III quarterfinal, 5-3.

The third-ranked Bulldogs (24-6-1) were upset by the Green Knights two weeks ago, 3-1, in the Harris Cup final and split the regular season matchups back in De Pere, Wisconsin in early February.

"That was a classic Adrian, St. Norbert game right there," coach Adam Krug said. "All you could ask for, highs and lows."

Adrian started low with the Green Knights scoring 14 seconds into the game, but after a slow start the Bulldogs started to take control. The Bulldogs outshot St. Norbert in the first period, 13-8, with Ian Amsbaugh scoring at the 8:18 mark off assists from Riley Murphy and Jacob Suede.

Adrian kept the momentum going in the second period with Matt Couto and Zachary Heintz each scoring off two assists from Mathew Rehding and one from Bradley Somers and Jaden Shields in the first seven minutes of the period.

St. Norbert didn't back down though, tying the game with a pair of goals at the 18:28 and 18:42 mark, however, the Bulldogs weren't done.

Riley Murphy wrapped around a Green Knights defenseman and scored with 2.3 seconds to go in what ended up being the game winner off assists from Suede. Suede found Murphy again in the games final moments on a empty-netter to seal the win.

Dershahn Stewart had another strong night with 29 saves.

"I had no idea how much time was left," Murphy said. "I felt the (defender) get on the wrong side of me and you don't get many chances with the defense on the wrong side against that team. I just kind of turned and flung it and crossed my fingers."

Following the goal Murphy led the high-five line and it went a little past the Bulldogs bench and had some words with their rival bench.

"I wished them good luck the rest of the game," Murphy said. "That was pretty much it."
