Additions, street closures, schedule: Things to know for Hoopla 2023
There are changes this year to the annual Hoopla tournament, but organizers still expect the usual family-fun experience the event has provided to Salem since 1999.
With construction going on downtown, the main court has been moved to State Street, on the other side of the Capitol building.
“It’s something that will be a learning curve,” Hoopla tournament director Jason Unruh said. “The overall flow of it will be the same, but different. It’s still a big long street, with the Capitol as the backdrop.”
Additions to Hoopla tournament
Hoopla has a big addition this year — a 1-on-1 tournament, which is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
So players have the opportunity to compete in a 1-on-1 tournament Thursday, 2-on-2 tournament Friday, and the classic 3-on-3 tournament Saturday and Sunday.
“We’re always thinking of ways to add to the experience of Hoopla, and giving people more opportunities to play,” Unruh said. “This is a great way to add another night of basketball.”
Unruh said organizers are expecting more than 1,000 teams to participate in the event.
Hoopla will have its unified basketball clinics and kids clinic during the week, and the contest finals on Saturday.
In addition to moving some courts around, and adding a 1-on-1 tournament, there are three key changes this year that Unruh wants participants to know.
Team check-ins will be at the YMCA at 685 Court St. NE.
The contest preliminaries will be held inside the YMCA gym.
The Hoopla sponsor hospitality area will be located on the YMCA rooftop.
“We’re going to have a record number of teams,” Unruh said. “We’re just super excited for this year’s event.”
