How accurately did ESPN’s Basketball Power Index predict Auburn’s SEC record?

Now that the regular season has come to a close, it is a perfect time to take a look back at the season that was for Auburn basketball.

Our first look-back features the ESPN Basketball Power Index, and how they forecasted Auburn’s SEC slate to conclude. Prior to the conference portion of the schedule, Auburn Wire examined how the BPI projected Auburn’s season to shake out. Did they get it right?

The men’s College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.

Auburn took out their frustrations on Georgia to kick off the month of February. Feb. 7 at Texas A&M

Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

Prediction: 43.7% chance to win

Auburn had its chances to win this one as the game would see 10 lead changes in the final eight minutes of the game. But fouls that resulted in trips to the free throw line ultimately costed the Tigers a win.

Feb. 11 vs. Alabama

Jake Crandall/ The Montgomery Advertiser

Prediction: 56.7%

Jordan Prather-USA TODAY Sports

Prediction: 25.9% chance to win

What really happened: Auburn lost, 86-54

The curse of Rupp Arena continues for Auburn. The Tigers had their best chance to knock off a substandard Kentucky team at their place, but could not get it done. March 1 at Alabama

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Running record: 9-8

Same story, different setting. In their first meeting, Auburn held a lead for a majority of the game before Alabama took control. The second time around, the Crimson Tide led for just 0:45 of game time, and erased a 17-point second-half deficit to take the overtime win.
