5 takeaways from Wednesday’s practice at Bengals training camp

Cincinnati Bengals training camp on Wednesday featured some interesting developments.

Chief among those was Joe Burrow’s first sit down with the media since his surgery, plus his showing up to work some 11-on-11 stuff with teammates.

Besides that, we got some noteworthy injury developments and the battle at left guard between Jackson Carman and Cordell Volson keeps throwing out some interesting looks.

Elsewhere on the field, this was one of the chippier practices the Bengals have had so far, with the offense and defense jawing back and forth, highlighted by names like Ja’Marr Chase getting in the mix.

Here’s a look at the takeaways and notes of merit from the day.

Burrow breakdown

Burrow confirmed to reporters that his appendix had indeed ruptured, which complicates the recovery timetable a tad. He also noted that he’s working hard to gain back as much weight as possible, though he won’t reveal how much he really lost. It’s unfortunate that Burrow’s had yet another setback in what was supposed to be a normal summer and the hope now is he doesn’t lose too much after an operation that impacted core muscles.

Burrow highlight

All that said, the above highlight and explanation from ESPN’s Stephania Bell was a big theme of the day — Burrow’s looking pretty good and with solid velocity despite the surgery hitting him in the area used to generate most of it.

Cordell Volson vs. Jackson Carman

The Volson vs. Carman battle at left guard turned in an odd day. The rookie Volson led off with the first team but Carman was right behind them. They swapped in and out every few plays. Then neither guy was in with the second team — that honor went to Trey Hill. That’s probably more about testing Hill’s versatility more than anything else. Either way, coaches surely hope the Giants play some starters in Week 2 of the preseason so they can see Volson and Carman against starting-caliber players.

Injury updates

Second-rounder Cam Taylor-Britt remains sidelined and could for another week or so. The fact La’el Collins wasn’t at practice might generate some buzz, but it’s merely for personal reasons. He’s been carefully managed so far but coaches have said it isn’t overly critical to see him get preseason reps. D’Ante Smith returned for the offensive line while tight end Mitchell Wilcox remains sidedlined.

Roster move

The Bengals felt they found an upgrade to the secondary depth with Javaris Davis, a 2020 undrafted free agent who spent time with the Chiefs and Dolphins last year. Davis is more depth after the team also cut Abu Daramy-Swaray after the first preseason game.
