49ers QB Brock Purdy embraces the Mr. Irrelevant nickname: 'I fell last for a reason'

Detroit Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has receipts of the 16 wideouts taken before him in the NFL draft.

Kanas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes counted to 10 with after scoring a touchdown against the Chicago Bears, referring to the franchise taking North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes went eight picks later to the Chiefs.

So does San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy have receipts of the eight other quarterbacks taken before him in the 2022 NFL Draft? The Iowa Star star doesn't — nor can he.

"Honestly, I am not that kind of guy," Purdy told NFL Network's Michael Robinson Monday night at the Super Bowl 58 media day on Monday. "I know a couple of the guys drafted before me but I've never held a grudge for it or anything. I am a believer that God has a plan for everybody and I fell last for a reason."

He added: "I've never held a grudge against other teams. It happened like it all needed to and I am blessed to be a part of the 49ers."

Purdy on having the nickname 'Mr. Irrelevant'

In a less-than-two-year span, Purdy has gone from being selected as the last overall pick in the draft — which gave him the nickname of Mr. Irrelevant — to one of the NFL's best quarterbacks.

He's the youngest 49ers starting quarterback to appear in a Super Bowl, passing the likes of Colin Kaepernick, Jimmy Garoppolo and Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young. When Purdy takes the field in Super Bowl 58, he will be the third Mr. Irrelevant to play in the big game. Marty Moore and Ryan Succop are the only other two.

"I'm okay with Mr. Irrelevant," said Purdy when asked by a reporter if its time for his nickname to be retired.

Purdy ready to disappoint Taylor Swift

Aside from Purdy and the 49ers and Mahomes and the Chiefs, one of the bigger storylines heading into Super Bowl 58 is will Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, make it back from Tokyo in time for the game? Swift is set to resume her Eras Tour later this week at the Tokyo Dome, with performances running through Saturday.

Purdy fielded a hypothetical question from NFL Network's Scott Hanson Monday if he is prepared to disappoint the four-time Grammy Album of the Year winner with a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter. Here's what the second-year quarterback had to say:

"Yes. I'll leave it at that," Purdy said with a smile.
