49ers place CB Jason Verrett on reserve/PUP list

The San Francisco 49ers will have to wait a little longer for the return of cornerback Jason Verrett.

Nienrs general manager John Lynch said the team is placing Verrett on the reserve/PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which will transfer into the regular season. Verrett tore his ACL back in Week 1 of the 2021 season, and he’s been on the PUP list since the start of training camp this summer.

With Verrett landing on the reserve/PUP list, that means he’ll miss at least the first four games of the regular season. That makes him eligible for a return in Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers. But considering players had to miss at least six games in prior years, it’s reassuring news.

The good news is Verrett’s loss won’t be a detriment to the secondary, as the 49ers have solid cornerback depth. It’s also a reason why the team hasn’t looked to rush Verrett back before he’s ready.

The move comes as San Francisco trims their roster to 80 players following the second preseason game. Defensive tackle Kalia Davis was also placed on the reserve/NFI (non-football injury) list.
