30 high school boys golfers to watch in Southwestern Indiana in 2024

EVANSVILLE — Southwestern Indiana is known for many things in high school athletics: football, basketball, soccer. The list goes on. Why not include golf?

The 2024 boys high school season began this past weekend with the final destination marked for Prairie View Golf Club in June. There are three locally ranked programs (North, Jasper and Gibson Southern) in the initial Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association poll, plus a handful of others to keep note of.

Golf is an outlier in being a team and individual sport. Here are 30 athletes to watch, in alphabetical order, this spring in the Evansville area.

Peyton Blackard, Gibson Southern

The junior is one of the top returning players in the state. The two-time defending sectional champion at Cypress Hills opened the season with a 69 in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invite. Committed to Notre Dame.

Peyton Butler, North

A four-year starter for the Huskies. The senior posted a 75.0 scoring average in the state tournament last year. Tied for 31st at the state championship. Second Team All-SIAC. Signed with Marian.

Cameron Chattin, South Knox

The senior was the Knox County champion and finished second overall at the Cyrpress Hills Sectional with a 73. Shot an 81 in the regional. Signed with Vincennes.

Carson Cook, Castle

The junior shot a 79 in the sectional at Helfrich. Second Team All-SIAC.

Grayson Coughlin, Memorial

The sophomore is the Tigers' top returner and shot a 74 in the regional. Finished tied for 39th at the state championship with a 73 in the second round. Second Team All-SIAC.

Jim Doepker, Mater Dei

The senior is one of four returners from a seventh-place finish at the regional. Second Team All-SIAC.

Ottie Droste, Gibson Southern

The senior is one of several key returners for the 16th-ranked Titans. Shot a 72 in their opening tournament this past weekend.

Jacob Eble, Castle

The junior is one of four returning starters for the Knights. Shot an 84 in the sectional at Helfrich.

Josh Fenwick, Mater Dei

The top returner for the regional qualifiers. The senior went 72-77 in the state tournament last year. First Team All-SIAC.

Xander Fleig, Forest Park

The sophomore is the top returner for the Rangers, missing the regional last year by one shot with an 81 at Sultan's Run.

Reed Johnson, Memorial

The sophomore is a key returner for the Tigers. Shot a 77 in the sectional followed by a 75 in the regional to help Memorial qualify for the state finals.

Luke Johnston, North

The junior solidified his high standing with a strong season last year. The sectional champion at Helfrich with a 67 and finished tied for 18th at the state championship. First Team All-SIAC.

Brayden Lamborne, Castle

The sophomore emerged with a strong debut last year. Shot a 70 in the sectional and 73 in the regional (missing the state championship by two shots). First Team All-SIAC.

Luke Lindsey, Vincennes Lincoln

The junior is one of several returning contributors for the Alices. Shot 81-82 in the state tournament. Second Team All-SIAC.

Michael McCarthy, Washington

The senior was an individual regional qualifier last year. Shot an 83 in the sectional at Cypress Hills.

Matthew Mills, Boonville

The senior was an individual regional qualifier last year. Shot a 75 at Helfrich and 82 at Country Oaks in the state tournament.

Andrew Noble, Tell City

The sophomore was an individual regional qualifier last year with an 80 at Sultan's Run.

Luke Price, North

The senior shot three rounds in the 70s in last year's state tournament. Tied for 47th at the state championship. Committed to Evansville.

Nolan Raaf, Heritage Hills

The senior was an individual regional qualifier last year with an 80 at Sultan's Run.

William Redden, Gibson Southern

The sophomore is one of multiple returners for the Titans. Shot a team-best 79 in the regional.

Hunter Riggs, Central

The junior is a two-time individual regional qualifier for the Bears. Shot 78-80 in the state tournament last spring.

Daymian Rij, Gibson Southern

The senior sat out last season after transferring from North. Sectional and regional individual champion as a sophomore. Committted to IUPUI.

Thomas Seger, Jasper

The junior is one of four returning lineup members for the defending sectional champions. Shot an 85 in the regional.

Caleb Schnarr, Jasper

The junior is the defending SIAC and two-time sectional individual sectional champion. Shot a 68 at Sultan's Run last year to repeat but missed the state finals by one shot at Country Oaks. First Team All-SIAC.

Luke Shappard, Jasper

The senior was the Wildcats' lone qualifier for the state championship last year and finished tied for 53rd. First Team All-SIAC.

Griffin Sohn, North

The senior is another with years of experience in the lineup. Shot 76 in the sectional and 78 in the regional. First Team All-SIAC.

Brody Sorrell, North

The junior is another solid player in the Huskies' deep lineup. Tied for fourth in the regional at Country Oaks with a 72. Tied for 18th at the state championship. First Team All-SIAC. Committed to Ball State.

Parker Steininger, Vincennes Rivet

The senior was an individual regional qualifier after shooting 78 in the sectional at Cypress Hills.

Dusty Taylor, Vincennes Lincoln

The junior is the Alices' top returner following a successful spring. Third overall with a 74 in the sectional at Cypress Hills. Also shot a 74 in the regional. Second Team All-SIAC.

Levi Welp, Jasper

The junior is a key returner for the 14th-ranked Wildcats. Shot a 77 in the sectional at Sultan's Run.
