3 ECI boys tennis teams win sectionals; girls golfer competes in IHSAA state finals

MUNCIE, Ind. — The IHSAA fall sports postseason is underway, and East Central Indiana athletes and teams are already making an impact.

Here's what local players and squads achieved over the weekend:

Delta boys tennis wins 31st straight sectional title

Delta boys tennis continued its rich tradition under head coach Tim Cleland, winning its 31st consecutive sectional title with a 3-2 victory over Yorktown on Saturday at Delta High School.

The Eagles (16-5) led 2-0 lead early after wins by No. 3 singles Jake Bilby (6-0, 6-1 v. Reid Butts) and No. 1 doubles Dalton Royal and Preston Shanayda (6-0, 6-3 v. Joe Stinson and Jayden Sarino), but Yorktown No. 1 singles Anson Isaacs kept the Tigers alive with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Simon Marlow.

As a result, Isaacs advanced in the individual singles tournament.

Delta championship was cemented by No. 2 singles Kody Vest (7-5, 6-0 v. Ryan Richards), marking the Eagles’ 58th straight dual-match victory over Yorktown.

Although the match was already lost, the Tigers' No. 2 doubles tandem of Tyler Koss and Elijah Carter won in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-0) over Delta's Aaron Elliott and Tyce Dishman.

Delta will play fellow ECI team Jay County at 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, in the Noblesville Regional.

Jay County boys tennis wins back-to-back sectional titles

With its 4-1 victory over Union City, host Jay County boys tennis won its second consecutive sectional title and third in four years.

Winning Patriots were No. 1 singles Abraham Dirksen, No. 2 singles Eli Dirksen (three sets), No. 1 doubles Gage Sims and Sam Myers (three sets), and No. 2 doubles Luke Muhlenkamp and Isaac Miller.

New Castle boys tennis wins back-to-back sectional titles

After topping Shenandoah 4-1 on Saturday, host New Castle boys tennis hoisted the sectional championship trophy for the second time in as many seasons.

Winning Trojans were No. 1 singles Leo Underhill (6-1, 6-0) No. 2 singles Vincent Farris (6-3, 6-2) No. 3 singles Matt Hastings (6-1, 6-1) and No. 2 doubles Cameron Hastings and Austin Nunez (6-1, 7-5).

New Castle will play Greenfield-Central on Tuesday at Mt. Vernon in the regional semifinals.

Shenandoah's No. 1 doubles team of Cooper Allen and Christian Dyer will advance to the individual doubles tournament next week.

Yorktown girls golf's Kayleigh Agugliaro finishes career at state finals

Yorktown girls golf senior Kayleigh Agugliaro was the lone ECI representative at the IHSAA state finals on Friday and Saturday at Prairie View Golf Club.

Over the two-day event, Agugliaro shot 83 and 86 to finish tied for 48th place with a score of 169 (plus-25).

She concluded her career having become a Delaware County, sectional and Hoosier Heritage Conference champion.
