3 Comets earn second at Cascades Wrestling Championship; Hillsdale competes in LCAA finals

GRASS LAKE — It was a late Friday night for area grapplers who traveled to the Cascades Conference Championship meet in Grass Lake.

The Jonesville Comets had several wrestlers earn podium finishes and medals before the night concluded. The team finished fifth overall in the team scores. Manchester won the championship meet.

Starting at 106, Harrison Packer took third place, earning all-conference honors. Packer fell in the semifinal round after receiving two byes. Packer wrestled to a 15-4 major decision win in the third-place match.

At 113, Blake Ryan had two pinfall victories during the tournament but did not place.

At 120, Cody Nichols did not place after an injury.

Max Smith (126) won via pinfall in the first period of the consolation round two but fell in the third round.

At 132, Carson Playford took second place, earning all-conference honors. Carson Playford won his first round via pinfall in the second period of his match. Playford received a bye in the quarterfinals and then won by a 6-2 decision in the semifinals. Playford wrestled for first place against A.J. Fielder of Hanover-Horton, losing in a 6-0 decision.

At 138, Tyler Milks took home all-conference honors with a second-place finish. Jonesville senior Tyler Milks received a bye in the first round and then won by a 17-2 tech fall in the quarters. In the semis, Milks won in a 6-4 decision. He wrestled Nathan Meyer of Manchester for the individual title. Milks lost in a 9-2 decision, ending up in silver.

Kaylynn Wise (150) did not place after elimination in the consolation semifinals.

Ben Colbart (157) did not place but had one pinfall win in the consolation rounds.

Asher McClain (165) did not place after being eliminated in the consolation rounds.

At 190, Issac Shively earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish. The senior earned his 100th career win during the tournament. To achieve this career milestone, Shively had two 3-2 decision wins to earn his shot at the medalist round. He then earned another 3-2 decision win to take home third for the Comets.

At 215, Evan McColley took second place and earned all-conference honors. MCColley had a pinfall over a minute into his quarterfinal match. McColley won by pinfall just under three minutes in the semifinals. McColley wrestled Nathan Fletcher of Manchester for first place, with Fletcher winning the gold medal.

Jonesville junior Cooper Stevens took fourth in the 285-weight class, earning all-conference honors. Stevens pinned his quarterfinal opponent under five minutes into his match. Stevens lost in the semifinal round but earned a shot at third place with a pinfall in the first period of his consolation match. Stevens fell in the third-place match.

District Wrestling Info

The Comets will head into team and individual district tournaments. Team districts will be held at Springport for the Comets on Thursday, Feb. 8. Wrestling starts between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Comets will then travel to Bronson to compete in their individual district tournament. Individual districts are held on Saturday, Feb. 10 and begin around 9 a.m. All postseason MHSAA event tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets can be found at GoFan.

Hillsdale competes in the LCAA league tournament duals

The Hillsdale Hornets competed in the unique LCAA league championship format, featuring team dual events. The Hornets took seventh place in the conference league tournament. The Dundee Vikings took first place, Hudson took second and Clinton took third.

In round one, the Hornets lost to Clinton High School 53-27. Talon Hugenall (138) and Brody Arnold (144) both earned pinfalls for the Hornets. Stephen Petersen (190) had a pinfall in less than a minute. John Petersen (215) won via a 6-2 decision. Colton Wolf (126) had a void win.

In round two, Madison High School defeated Hillsdale 51-24. Stephen Petersen had a pinfall in the beginning of his match. John Petersen received a void win. Colton Wolf earned a pinfall in the first period of his match. Jace Ringman (175) earned a pinfall win in the second period of his match.

In round three, Onsted defeated Hillsdale 54-28. Ethan Wolf (132) earned a 10-0 major decision win. Josh Herring (165) earned a pinfall win. Stephen and John Petersen both got quick pinfall wins. Wyatt Wahtola (285) earned a pinfall win.

In round four, Hillsdale lost to Dundee 59-19. Declan Flannery (157) received a void win. Stephen Petersen earned a void win. John Petersen won a 14-0 major decision. Wahtola earned a 5-0 decision win.

In round five, Hillsdale defeated Blissfield 46-34. Earning pinfall wins for the Hornets were Josh Herring, Stephen and John Petersen, Wyatt Whatola and Ethan Wolf. Earning void wins were Devon Carver and Jace Ringman. Brody Arnold had a 13-5 major decision win.

In round six, Hudson defeated Hillsdale 64-18. The Petersen brothers both earned pinfall wins. Wahtola earned a pinfall win.

In round seven, Hillsdale defeated Ida 52-21. Earning pinfall wins for Hillsdale were Miles Brown (144), Josh Herring, Jace Ringman and Colton Wolf. Oliver Heckel (106), Charis Winn (113), and the Petersen brothers all earned void wins. Ethan Wolf won a 15-5 major decision.

District Wrestling Info

The Hornets will head to Eaton Rapids for the Team District tournament (District 193) on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. After that, the Hornets will battle for individual district titles and the right to wrestle in the regional round on Feb. 10. They head to Williamston High School for District 24. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. All postseason MHSAA event tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets can be found at GoFan.
