2024 Cowboys baseball has high expectations

Mar. 21—The Abilene Cowboys baseball teams expectations are high this season, and for a good reason.

Abilene looks to return to the 4A state tournament for the third straight season, under head coach Travis Bartley, and assistant coaches Billy Hansen, and Travis Evans. A luxury that the coaches have is that every starting player from last years state team returns, and with that comes experience along with depth on the team.

Eight players returning for the Cowboys earned some type of postseason recognition a year ago, led by senior Zach Miller who earned All State Utility Infielder, and NCKL first team catcher honors. Also earning First Team NCKL recognition were Kyson Becker as pitcher, Stocton Timbrook as infielder, Heath Hoekman as infielder, and Thomas Keener as utility player. Others earning recognition for Honorable Mention all NCKL were Tyler Holloway as catcher, Drew Hansen as infielder, and Lane Hoekman as outfielder.

Abilene will once again have depth on the mound this year, as they return several players who have pitching experience. Leading the team will be the top two starting pitchers in Stocton Timbrook, and Kyson Becker.

Head coach Travis Bartley commented: "I believe the NCKL is arguably one of the best leagues in the state. You have to show up every night to have a chance to win against anyone in the league. Ourselves, and Clay Center made it to state last year, and Wamego just missed out. I expect to contend again this year for the league title."

Abilene will open the season at 4:00 on Friday March 22nd against Salina South at Deans Evans Stadium in Salina.
