2023 Ryder Cup updates: Team USA has a shot to take down Team Europe after dramatic Day 2

Day 2 of the 2023 Ryder Cup packed a lot of action, and Team Europe continued strong play. However, a rejuvenated Team USA closed in on the scoring late, and chipped away at the lead. The score is 10.5 to 5.5 heading into Day 3.

Team Europe's Vicktor Hovland and rookie Ludvig Åberg proved to be an excellent European duo in the Ryder Cup. They were all smiles after their impressive performance against World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka. The final match score was 9 & 7, which is the largest winning margin in Ryder Cup history.

Team U.S. attempted to mount a comeback in the afternoon Four-ball matches, winning two out of the four matches. The American's will have to do major work on Sunday's singles to have a chance at raising the 2023 Ryder Cup trophy.

Day 2 ended with Team Europe 10.5 points to Team U.S. 5.5 points.

Sunday’s Day 3 Final information:

On the final day of the 2023 Ryder Cup, there will be 12 single matches with 12 points at stake.

The first singles match starts at 5:35 a.m. ET, with the final match beginning at 7:47 a.m. ET.

It is unclear if American golfer Ricky Fowler will participate in Sunday's Ryder Cup after sitting out all of Day 2 without any reason given for his absence.

Final Match headed down to 18th hole

The end of Day 2 was quite remarkable.

Team USA's Patrick Cantlay maintained his composure and made a difficult putt on the 17th hole look easy. Both Team Europe and Team USA were even with a crucial point at stake as they approached the 18th hole.

Cantlay shines again and sinks a 20-foot putt on the 18th to give the American side an extra point on Day 2. The U.S. won 3 out of 4 afternoon matches.

Rose of the day, Justin Rose widens Team Europe's lead:

Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre secures Team Europe's first point of the afternoon, after the duo won their match 3&2 against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

Team Europe leads Team U.S. 10.5 to 4.5 with one match left on Day 2.

Max Homa is America’s hero:

The Ryder Cup rookie helped Team U.S. secure another point during the afternoon session, sinking an 8-foot putt and bringing the duo's score to 2 & 1 over Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard.

The score is now Team Europe 9 ½ to Team U.S. 4 ½ with two remaining matches going on.

Burns, Morikawa win match:

After a long hard match, Team U.S. earned their first point of the afternoon session by defeating Hovland and Aberg 4 & 3, inching them closer to a fighting chance at the 2023 Ryder Cup trophy.

Morikawa, Burns 5-up thru 13:

Morikawa came close to winning the 13th hole against Hovland and Aberg with a birdie putt, but unfortunately, it missed the mark and went off to the left. As a result, Europe won the hole. Despite this setback, Burns and Morikawa are still leading by 5-up thur 13.

Sam Burns’ taunts crowd

After sinking a putt, Sam Burns gestured to the crowd, placing his hand up to his ear and saying "I can't hear you." An out-of-character outburst that shows how much passion is behind the battle to give Team U.S. a fighting chance at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

How does fourballs work in Ryder Cup?

Four-ball: In this two-man team game, each player plays their own ball, leading to four balls being in play on every hole. The team's score is based on the lowest score of the two players on each hole. The team with the lowest score wins the hole.

Foursome: Each team of two players takes turns hitting one ball per hole until the hole is complete. The team with the lowest score on each hole wins.

Points: The scoring system for the Ryder Cup is straightforward. Whenever a team wins a match, they earn a point for their team. In the event of a tie, both teams receive half a point each. To secure a victory in the Ryder Cup, a team must earn a total of 14 points. If the final score is tied at 14-14, the current trophy holders will maintain possession of the cup.

Americans don’t go down without a fight

Max Homa sinks a 30-foot birdie at the par-4 fifth to win the hole after Fleetwood and Hojgaard both miss at a shorter range. Max Homa has been the only American player to play in all the 2023 sessions thus far.

Sam Burns comes out swinging and has made three birdies in the first six holes, including a four-foot birdie on the sixth to take the hole, giving his side a 3-up lead.

Team Europe keeps the momentum going

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton of Europe responded after Team USA secured their first full point of the 2023 Ryder Cup by defeating Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele with a score of 2 & 1. Europe won three out of four morning foursomes matches and extended their lead to 9 ½ to 2 ½.

Homa and Hatman get Team U.S. first full point

Team U.S., which has been struggling, finally earned their first full point thanks to Max Homa and Brian Harman. They defeated Shane Lowry and Straka by a score of 4 & 2. However, the team still has a lot of ground to make up if they hope to have a chance to win the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Hovland and Ludvig pick up where they left off

Victor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg of Team Europe made history in the Ryder Cup by defeating Brooks Koepka and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler 9 & 7 in the largest foursome match win.

McIlroy, Fleetwood get Europe rolling on Day 2

On Day 2 of the Ryder Cup, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood secured the first point by defeating Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth with a score of 2 & 1. McIlroy effortlessly sank a 25-foot birdie at the 15th hole, putting them in the lead by two with three holes left. McIlroy then impressively made a 13-foot putt for par on the par-3 17th hole, ultimately resulting in their victory. This win brings McIlroy's Ryder Cup record to an impressive 3-0-0.
