2023 Boston Marathon: Race schedule, TV, streaming info for Monday's marathon

Elite distance runners will congregate in Massachusetts on Monday for the Boston Marathon.

Monday marks the 127th edition of the Boston Marathon. There are approximately 30,000 athletes from more than 100 countries that will participate in this year’s marathon, which is the most since 2019.

“This will be the fastest and most decorated Boston Marathon across all of our divisions in race history,” Boston Athletic Association director of professional athletes Mary Kate Shea said to the Boston Globe in January.

The annual marathon traditionally takes place on Patriots’ Day (the third Monday in April).

How to watch Boston Marathon

ESPN will broadcast the marathon on April 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. ET The Olympic Channel, via Olympics.com, will also cover the marathon extensively.

Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase – She won the gold medal in the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat – She won the Boston Marathon in 2017 and 2021.

Ethiopia’ Atsede Baysa – She won the Boston Marathon in 2016 and was crowned champion at the Chicago Marathon in 2012.

Israel’s Lonah Salpeter – Salpeter won a gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2018.

What's the weather like in Boston on Monday?

Monday’s forecast calls for 61 degrees with a 78 percent chance of rain, according to the Weather Channel. Meteorologists also predict winds of 10 to 20 mph.

Boston Marathon route

The 26.2-mile marathon is hosted by multiple cities and towns in the Greater Boston area. The course runs from Hopkinton in Middlesex County to Copley Square in Boston. The finish line is on Boylston Street near Copley Square.

Boston Marathon history

The Boston Athletic Association has organized the Boston Marathon since 1897. The inaugural Boston Marathon took place on April 19, 1897. The race was inspired by the marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics. The original distance of the race was 24.5 miles. The marathon was lengthened to 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to the Olympic standard in 1924.
