2007 Giants will be honored before home opener against Lions
It’s hard to believe but this upcoming season is the 10-year anniversary season of the New York Giants winning Super Bowl XLII.
Co-owner John Mara said at a fan forum for season ticket holders Monday the 2007 Giants will be honored on Monday, Sept. 18 before the Giants’ home opener against the Detroit Lions. The 2007 team will also appear at Ellis Island and at Yankee Stadium during the weekend leading up to the home opener.

“It seems like it just yesterday,” Mara said. “It was a very special memory. It was the greatest victory we ever had as a franchise. To beat that team, in that setting, will always be the most special for me.”
The Giants defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII as 12-point underdogs. The Patriots sought to become the first team to go 19-0 in NFL history.
Quarterback Eli Manning’s 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining sealed the victory. This was four plays after Manning threw a 32-yard pass to David Tyree, which Tyree secured against his helmet. The Helmet Catch, as it is known, is one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history.
Super Bowl XLII was a rematch of that year’s regular season finale, won by the Patriots 38-35. The Giants chose to play their starters despite having already clinched a playoff berth. They led 28-16 in the third quarter, the Patriots’ largest deficit of the season. Although the Pats mounted a comeback, the Giants showed they could compete with the first team go 16-0 in the regular season.
The Giants won three road playoff games (against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, and Green Bay Packers) Super Bowl XLII, the third team to accomplish the feat. They were the fifth Wild Card to win the Super Bowl and the first NFC Wild Card to do so. The 2007 Giants also set a record for most consecutive road wins in a season (11).
