17-year-old cyclist dies after crash during race in Austria, racing team says

A 17-year-old cyclist in Austria died after he was in a crash during a race, his racing team announced Saturday.

Campana Imballaggi Geo&Tex Trentino said in a statement Italian cyclist Jacopo Venzo was in a crash and "suffered a terrible fall" while descending a hill during the first stage of the Junioren Rundfahrt on Friday. Venzo was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement from Paul Resch, president of the race.

"With tears in our eyes and a devastated heart we announce that our junior Jacopo Venzo has left us," the team said. "The whole Geo&Tex Packing Bell Trentino is tightening around the family, friends and everyone who wished Jacopo well in this moment of immense pain."

The Junioren Rundfahrt was canceled on Saturday.

"Jacopo was an extraordinary young man with a future all to write in sports and especially in life, and for that it hurts even more," his team added. "Jacopo, thank you for the nice moments we spent together. You can't imagine how much we'll miss you."
