100 TDs? This football star is closing in: 112 Section V offensive players to watch
Is 100 career touchdowns attainable for senior Bodie Hyde?
For a quarterback who's been the focal point of Oakfield-Alabama/Elba's offense since his freshman season, reaching the century mark may be a reach for many, but it's within reach for Hyde given he has another big season and perhaps a long postseason run.
"Bodie isn't counting his stats, but 100 touchdowns may be possible," coach Tyler Winter said. "He's not afraid of the bright lights and he shoulders a huge load for our team to have success."
Hyde became the quarterback on a whim his freshman year when the prospective starter broke his wrist, registering 10 total touchdowns under the Wing-T offense. Hyde then mastered the Gun-T as he grew into a running threat and became a vocal leader. His confidence grew after scoring 25 touchdowns and winning the Section V Class D title in 2021. Hyde followed that up with over 1,200 rushing yards and 29 total touchdowns to repeat in 2022. He made All-Greater Rochester after both championship seasons.
"He's wise beyond his years and an incredible athlete," Winter said. "It's good to have a 'been there, done that' type of player. They can rely on him in tough moments."
Top offensive players in Section V
If you have a good quarterback, your team is in good shape. Just ask Brighton, home to dual threat Tyler Martinovich, who's "gained another level of command" according to coach Steve Lian. Zymier Jackson at East/WOIS is just as dangerous as anyone. And East Rochester/Gananda will have a new look with Aquinas transfer Ben Newman.
Expect running backs Landyn Thomas from Attica/Alexander and Greece Arcadia's Deshaun McClemmon to get a bulk of the touches again. McClemmon rushed for over 100 yards in all but one game in 2022. "The kid can do it all. He's an athlete," coach Brian Shonitsky said.
East Rochester/Gananda's Miles Caviness and Victor's Adam Ruffalo are also poised for big seasons. Receivers Anthony Diaz and Ervin Wiggins are a lethal combination at East/WOIS. UPrep's Tyrell Simmons and Juelz Russell are another duo to watch out for as the Griffins reload. "I feel like our senior class is strong this year," Simmons said.
A good tight end can be an X-factor. Victor's Nick Leonard is lethal as a run blocker and route runner. Isaiah Ballard's return in Irondequoit may turn things around for the Eagles. Linemen come in all forms. Are you a monument for a Division I prospect like Brighton's 6-foot-5 270-pound Val Kondratenk, or do you have a high IQ and can pull from center like UPrep's Dallas Harris?
This list is comprised of coach nominations and returning Section V all-stars from 2022.
