1 dead in overnight vehicle vs. pedestrian crash in NE ABQ

Aug. 8—A woman was killed after a vehicle struck her late Monday night south of Interstate 40, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.

APD's Motor Unit responded shortly after 11 p.m. to the intersection of Pennsylvania and Mountain NE where they discovered a silver Volkswagen sedan had been traveling northbound on Pennsylvania Street when it struck a woman who had been pushing a shopping cart in the lane, said APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos in a statement.

Gallegos said Albuquerque Fire Rescue declared the woman dead at the scene, and the Volkswagen had fled.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in this crash, but "pedestrian error and speed are believed to be a contributing factors at this time," Gallegos said.
