Two dead after fatal North Fort Myers crash Friday evening

Two North Fort Myers residents died in a fatal crash Friday at the intersection of U.S. 41 / Tamiami Trail and Sabal Springs Boulevard, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A release detailed how the crash occurred, but did not identify the two killed.

At about 6:30 p.m., a man, 67, was driving himself and three others south on U.S. 41, near the Sabal Springs Boulevard intersection, the release said.

At the same time, an SUV traveling north on the outermost lane of U.S. 41 south of the Sabal Springs intersection carried one woman, 74.

The driver of the sedan attempted to turn left across U.S. 41 and onto Sabal Springs Boulevard. However, the report said that in doing so, he failed to yield the right of way to the SUV.

The front of the SUV crashed into the right side of the sedan, sending it spinning onto Sabal Springs Boulevard, while the SUV veered off the road and came to rest in a ditch.

The drivers of the SUV and the sedan sustained minor injuries, but two of the sedan's passengers, a woman, 68, and a man, 79, were killed. The remaining passenger, a woman, 89, survived the crash, but suffered serious injuries.

All involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts. The crash is still under investigation.
